LEGO announces Animal Crossing theme!

Posted by ,

LEGO has just announced a brand new theme, developed in conjunction with Nintendo and presumably arriving in 2024: LEGO Animal Crossing!

The video game series was launched in 2001 and its animal characters have been translated to minifigure form, as shown in a video published on social media.

Watch the teaser video after the break...

The large heads of these minifigures definitely evoke Fabuland, so I am wondering whether the models accompanying them will also follow that style.

What are you hoping to see from LEGO Animal Crossing? Let us know in the comments.

LOL, I said the villagers would all be popular ones like Rosie and Fauna.

By in United Kingdom,

Possibly LEGOs best-selling theme of 2024?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully theres a few house sets with modularity allowing you to swap roof colors and doors and furniture and all of that easily. Perfect theme for it.

Gravatar

Shoot, now I have to buy another full series. Thanks Lego.

Would probably be easier and maybe cheaper to buy the colours and pieces you want and then mod the sets or design your own once the form of the sets is revealed.

I'm super excited for this!

And sad knowing there's little chance of Katt or Hornsby getting a spot.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Nice! I've been playing the game every day since I got it a couple of years ago so it'll be great to combine the two things taking up most of my free time. Can't wait.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Slightly worrying that those trees look like 4+ duplo.

Gravatar

I don't know anything about Animal Crossing, so I hope they reach their target demographic.

But where is Raymond!?

Gravatar

I don't know anything about Animal Crossing other than it exists, but the heads on these look really fun. Fubland haters should just ignore this theme and keep the comments to themselves.

I'm happy when Lego releases themes I'm not interested in so I can focus on my wanted list that grow and grow, but good for those who like Animal Crossing!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent! I've played a lot of ACNH with my kids over the past year, they are going to love this.

I immediately thought of the Fabuland link too, have to break out my old figures!

Looking good. Fauna looks great! I hope there's a complete Nook's Cranny set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Man, I hope the figures are actually produced well.

I love this series, and would love a good model of the starter player house. Fingers crossed.

Also, minifig series to get some lesser-known villagers out there?

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Seems to be a bit late to the party. Haven't heard anything about that game since 2020. I'm sure it'll still have some hardcore fans but seems to me that the window of opportunity for maximising on the game popularity has passed. Unless there's a new one coming out? (I don't care for the game so I'm out of the loop on any potential sequels).

Anyway...minifigures for this too. Sure.

Just GOD FORBID they do minifigures for Super Mario...

Gravatar

Oh man, that's awesome! Glad to see those ideas sets that kept popping up were not a lost cause!

Another Nintendo franchise? This is promising for the future! I especially would like to see Pokemon too; there's a lot of potential there.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Where does this fit in the Fabuland timeline? is this before or after the great Chima Wars?

Gravatar

If they release any of the Hippo charachters im gonna be soooooo poor as theyre my daughters favourites and i will have to find them all. Hippeux being top of the list.

Gravatar

Gravatar

Quite a Fabuland vibe from minifigs. Although I never played Animal Crossing I want them all :-) Hoping sets will be equally interesting as minifigs are

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I've never heard about Animal Crossing. Is this popular in the US or UK only, or is it worldwide known?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’d really like Raymond, Punchy, and Bob figures. They’re my three favorite villagers. I’d also love to see a museum set with Blathers.

Divergent timeline. At first, all Fabulanders lived in peace. In one timeline, an advanced civilisation emerged and spread across the great seas, giving us Animal Crossing. In another, differences could not be settled, bringing us Chima. Simple as.

Whelp, this is another collab that I never expected to happen. I know lots of people hate on licensed sets, but if we keep getting interesting collabs like this, I think they are doing way more to push the horizons of LEGO than they are hurting LEGO.

So to summarize we have:
"Fabuland" (a seemingly nice land where deadly predator's secretly pull the strings)
post-apoc "Fabuland 2: Furry Road" (also known as Legends of Chima)
we have "Fabuland - part 3: The Downfall" (set just before the Chima Wars, and also known as Animal Crossing)

Chima could have been Fabuland 2 had they not made it an action based theme.

Lego Vidiyo could have been Fabuland 2 had they focused on the sets instead of the gimmick.

But why look for Fabuland in other licences?
If those animal costumes in the Minifigures series were anthromorphs instead of costumes, we could have had a nice set of figures now.
This is why Wolf Guy (71010) howls at the moon by night.

But to stay on topic: Great! Animal Crossing! Can't wait to see the sets!

Great. Another licenced theme no one asked for but TLG considers an opportunity to be a cash cow. And of course we can get Animal Crossing minifigures but wouldn't get Super Mario ones. Makes no sense.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not for me, but very cute, and I'm going to take this as another sign that the Nintendo/Lego relationship is going well so we'll eventually get Zelda. Just need it to hit 10k on ideas a few more times and that should do it...

By in Netherlands,

If the sets have references to fabuland, with for example fabuland windows or fabuland roof pieces i will go to Denmark and kiss the designers.

Animal Crossing is like Minecraft a real cool gaming theme that works very well in lego. I can’t wait to build me an island

Gravatar
By in United States,

Haven’t played the games so this doesn’t appeal to me but hopefully this means we’ll finally get Mario Minifigures, as well. LEGO actually collabed with Animal Crossing before by putting Monkie Kid custom decals into the game back in 2020.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My personal hope for this theme is that there's a primary house set, and then each set is usually some other amenity like a park, camp, store, etc, but each set comes with a bunch of different furniture builds and the motivation here is to decorate the house set however you want, this would capture some of the spirit of Animal Crossing!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I hope TLC makes a mountain of money from this. As an AFOL, I have zero interest in this, but the more money they make, the more they will be able to keep making large and complex sets for adults.

GO LEGO!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone doubting this crossover has clearly never played an Animal Crossing game before. It’s a match made in heaven as great as Lego Star Wars or Lego Harry Potter. There’s no doubt I’m buying the whole first wave. My dream is to get all of my island’s villagers in Lego form. Hornsby, Bones and Bluebear please!

Gravatar

An Animal Crossing Collectable Minifigures set would be similar to those Animal Crossing trading cards (that do something inside the game).

I hope we get a CMF series for Animal Crossing!
There are over 400 different villagers (not including the full characters time Tom, Able sisters, etc), we're not sure how many villagers will be covered int his wave of sets, so having a CMF series would be great to cover some the villagers we won't get in sets.

My spouse and I were just talking about that during lunch... that there are faint rumors, or at least hopes, that a new Animal Crossing game will be out shortly after the Switch 2's release next spring.

This adds weight to that rumor. I can't imagine Nintendo convinced Lego to license an IP that surged three years ago but has since petered out. There isn't a hot market for Animal Crossing collectibles right now, but Lego must have been assured by Nintendo that there will be in the coming months or year.

Gravatar

Soon all of lego city will be in debt to Tom Nook.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Obviously TLG excluded K.K. Slider from the teaser cause he’s the most anticipated character.

Right?

…Where is K.K. Slider?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can see this appealing to many children, but to me as an adult who never played the games, it doesn't do much.

If they ever decide to release a Legend of Zelda theme though, then LEGO can take my money.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was recently stunned to learn that the video game industry is nearly three times the size of the movie industry. I watch movies, but rarely play video games, so my perspective didn't give me any intuition about how much money there is in games. But I bet Lego knows!

Maybe,

I'm thinking though they'll have like Town Hall, a store for Nook, maybe the some of the vehicles that have appeared.

Outside of that though? Maybe a house for a villager and maybe a set or two with a house for the other town inhabitants. Those are the sets I think should have modular elements. Especially if the theme continues for a few years like Mario.

I think the hopes for a new console release next spring are INCREDIBLY unlikely and optimistic considering they haven’t officially announced one at all. Traditionally we’d have heard about it through a Direct or E3-esque presentation at least 9 months before. Same for Sony and Microsoft, you need the hype build up leading up to it.
And Nintendo generally don’t have any more directs in a year after the September one. Earliest is usually January or February of next year, and it’d be silly to announce a console a month or two out from release.
Even though they’ve not actively got an Animal Crossing in a “life cycle”, they’re still doing things with the series. There was a collaboration with an aquarium that was announced just last month I think.
All that said, we know they’re working on a new console. They always are as soon as one releases. And it’ll probably be *soon* but not spring next year soon.

Anyway, to the point of the discussion. Very excited that the rumours were true. My wallet, not so much. Hope we get to see some set pictures and more figures soon

Animal Crossing is a game franchise that has a wide appeal outside of the usual video game audience. A lot of people still play it but you're not gonna hear about it as much from "regular" gamers that are playing Fortnite or their yearly Call of Duty or FIFA.

Another big one is the Sims. Absolutely massive game but you don't really hear about it too often.

Despite being a 2020 release there will probably be more playtime put into Animal Crossing this year than 2023 games like Resident Evil 4 remake, Final Fantasy 16, Forza Motorsport, Super Mario RPG, etc . . .

Based on patterns of negative comments by location here I’ve come to the conclusion the Sun must never shine in Germany.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

For years LEGO has been trying to produce content to compete in a digital space. It turns out all they ever needed to do was make models of existing game characters. The attraction of owning a collection of tiny dolls of your favourite video game protagonists is irresistible to reasonably large numbers of gaming fans, and clearly outweighs the costs of licensing. And as sets such as The Mighty Bowser have shown, there can be great scope for creativity.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

We know that Nintendo have control over what gets made and they didn't want Lego making Mario minifigures as part of the licensing deal.

Pokemon is a licence part-owned by Nintendo and deals have been done elsewhere (Mega Blocks).

There will be a Great Deku Tree Zelda (with minifigures) set coming out next year.

Animal Crossing is a perfect fit for Lego as it's family friendly, fits Lego's ethos and has wide popularity. Can't believe we still get comments like "I've never heard of it, therefore Lego shouldn't produce it".

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My younger daughter likes to play Animal Crossing. She's not too interested in LEGO anymore though. But she might like these figures. They capture the likeness of the originals quite well. Not all cartoonish figures lend themselves to be reproduced as LEGO minifigs, but these certainly do.

Star dew Valley is great, but there wouldn’t be anything unique about it in Lego form. It would just be farm Lego sets, of which we already have.

Not nearly as many as some of us would like, mind you!

However, as a fan of Fabuland, Chima, and animal-headed hominids in general, I'm mildly enthusiastic about this theme. Will have to see the actual sets before deciding how much of a real danger to my wallet it will be, though.

Gravatar

I think they look great and can also get behind the Fabuland 2 hype, but lego needs to go back to making its own stuff and not relying so heavily on licensed themes
