Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 19

Posted by ,

I am expecting one more model from The Three Broomsticks today, although hopefully one that improves upon the rather underwhelming table provided yesterday.

There is ample material to draw upon, after all...

Fireplaces have already appeared in the Friends, City and Marvel Advent Calendars this year, so the time is right for Harry Potter to join the roster. This fireplace is basic and I think there was an opportunity to portray the stone hearth shown in the movies more accurately, although I like the horns displayed above the fire, which are taken directly from the film series.

Overall - This fireplace looks good, but needed to be a little more substantial to recreate the film setting properly.

I'd say that if you're a seasoned (no pun) Lego Advent builder, you reasonably know to expect a fireplace, a tree, some thematic gifts, and if you're in Star Wars or Marvel, one or two frustrating builds like a weapons rack, bag of parts, or a singular cape piece.

I was hoping for a cape or maybe some web accessories.

It looks fine, but the amount of gray makes it less christmassy and more regular fireplace for some reason

Needs Sirius Black's face.

The Potter calendars seem to be the only ones that are almost entirely based on broad winter play rather than Christmas itself. Maybe the exception is the 2021 Yule Ball calendar. Last year's hardly had any holiday theming to it except the dreidel piece.

No such luck. You’ll have to suffer with unique minifigs and exclusive printed parts.

Day 19 in the first HPAC was also a fireplace, and a much nicer one in my opinion.

Also, I think the brick yellow roof pieces on the bottom should be grey, to match the stone of the fireplace in the movies.

Still, the gold antler piece is nice, and this might be small enough to squeeze into the Three Broomsticks of 76388

To day is "Let's get over with it"-day

By in Italy,

This build satisfyingly fits so well under the chimney depicted on the packaging, between 7 and 17.

100% OCD-rated

Toasty. Not bad. Not great. Antler is nice touch.

I confess I don’t remember what the other three fireplaces looked like much beyond the Marvel one having Mjolnir hung on it. Golden antlers make this one stand out a fair bit, so I’m saying this one might be best

I wouldn't trust those uncontained flames sticking out near that rug.

2019 HPAC was based around the scene in the Great Hall when Harry and Ron open their presents from Molly in Year 1 (Hermione is wearing the scarf when she comes up to say goodbye before heading home for the holiday). They’re literally wearing Christmas presents, and there are four presents in House colors later in the calendar. 2020 was indeed the Yule Ball, but Yule is historically more of a generic pagan winter celebration, and got co-opted into the Christmas tradition. Not being from Scotland, I’m not really sure if the Yule Ball would have been a separate thing, or part of Christmas celebrations at Hogwarts.

2021 HPAC covers the Year 1 story up to the point when everyone gets sorted into their Houses (hence why none of the students have House colors on), and really focused more on the affiliated game. 2022 did the same thing, but touching on all eight movies (not sure how they would have dealt with this if Year 7 hadn’t been split up into two films).

This year is Hogsmeade, from Year 7a, I believe? I got the impression they left Hogwarts before Christmas in that story, but can’t be sure as I’ve never read the books.

Slug Club is the one remaining Christmasy scene that seems a logical subject for a future HPAC, assuming they don’t shy away from it due to the tone of the film it’s from.
