Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 4

Posted by ,

The Mandalorian will presumably be our focus over the next few days, after Din Djarin's N-1 Starfighter yesterday.

Hopefully whatever arrives next can match the high standard of the N-1 Starfighter...

For the first time in many years of opening LEGO Advent Calendars, I received the wrong pack of elements today, instead getting a duplicate of another item. Fortunately, today's seasonal Pit Droid consists of common parts, so I was able to assemble it and am very glad I could because this little droid is charming.

The design is essentially identical to the Pit Droid found in the 2020 Advent Calendar, but this one is dressed for the Christmas season, including red and white highlights. The red 2x2 dish with a white 1x1 round plate on top is especially clever and the droid is properly articulated as well, as its head is even able to tilt slightly, which conveys lots of personality. A sack is supplied too, so the droid can deliver spare parts across Tatooine!

Overall - I was impressed with the original Pit Droid from a couple of years ago and this festive version is even better.

It looks great. I like the 'santa hat'

Pit droids deserve love!

Day 4:

5. Marvel - unavoidable, can't be worse - except another bag with energy effects
4. HP - nice print, but that's it
3. Friends - also usable outside of holiday/winter theme
2. City - cool Minifig! LEGO should think about releasing sports teams. Unlicensed, please.
1. SW - even better!

Usually the seasonal variants of SW characters come only later; to get Santa Pit Droid so early was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. I do know we’re getting at least one more brick-built droid-as-Christmas-iconography, plus at least one seasonally-decorated true minifigure, so the holiday spirit is strong with this one.

The nice thing is that the abundance of spare parts in here almost gives you half the pieces for an additional droid. By my count, you need another dish, the shoulder joint piece, a 5-stud 1x1 brick, two arms, and the feet clips. (I had a bunch of those pieces in my stockpiles of varying colors, so I decided to make a bundle of pit droids for LULZ.)

This brought a smile to my face. I doff my hat to the creator.

Got to say that I am disappointed with the new card separators in the calendars this year, today I got a completely different set because all of the card has bent and it flimsy.

Is he meant to have a red tile on his back? the instruction image isn't clear and I can't tell here either here. It feels like it ought to have one

Promotional imagery shows that it should be on the front. I imagine it's just to give him some Santa color. Previous versions of this Pit Droid don't use either a front tile, or the one on top (creating the white Santa pom-pom).

Ah yes, I've just watched the 360 view on Lego shop and yeah he doesn't have a red tile on the back, only the front

I had this problem too, and several other people on here too. I'm definitely ok with using paper instead of plastic, but surely the design could be better.

Well even if he’s technically only supposed to have it on the front, I went ahead and put the extra piece on the back anyway. Might as well add even more color!

Of course, that makes him 2/3 of a brick thicker than a standard Pit Droid. Him being a Santa, this might be appropriate.

By in United States,

Hopefully one day we'll get a proper podracing set (maybe a pod or two that aren't Anakin or Sebulba) and they include some of these pit droids. While gigantic, I find the 1999 designs lovely, and this is a great modern interpretation short of making a bunch of dedicated parts, but that's also why Pit Droids are so lovable in LEGO form. Creative use of existing parts to make a character. But please, no WAC-47, that character sucks.

Oh also, please return to flipping the tap piece around and including a stud for the eye.

By in United States,

Sort of a shame the tap piece wasn't green, to continue the Christmas theming, but that's only something that just occurred to me, hours after I opened and built it; I'm still very pleased with this guy. And you could argue that this guy continues basing models on The Mandalorian; Peli Motto and all that.

Yup, they both suck and blow.

@Legodp:
The thing is, the egg-carton inserts were biodegradable. I know someone who used to cut them up and use them to plant flowers. The only new advantage these provide is that they pack flat.

By in United States,

I don't understand why they did away with the egg crate inserts. I would think they would have been cheaper to produce and a bit more ecologically friendly. I had two bags in my window for day three. Slid open the box & put the extra back in what I presume is it's proper position. Hopefully it will stay there until that day it's supposed to be revealed.

Yep, no problem with plastic to paper, but as others have suggested the egg-cartons provide a good solution as they were stiff and environmentally friendly.
