Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

Our recent focus upon Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace continued on day sixteen, as Anakin's podracer arrived, so another Prequel Trilogy item seems likely today.

There are certainly plenty of possibilities...

Almost every vehicle and character introduced during 1999 has returned throughout the long history of LEGO Star Wars, although this Advent Calendar bricks back something which was missing. Minifigure-scale Pit Droids appeared in both 7131 Anakin's Podracer and 7171 Mos Espa Podrace but this is their first subsequent appearance and I think the droid looks superb.

Reddish brown and dark bluish grey is the perfect colour selection and I like the 2x2 dish that forms the protective shell around the head. Exactly the same technique appeared during 1999 but this figure is otherwise quite different from its predecessor, exploiting new pieces to include more realistic arms and legs. Admittedly, the legs look stubby and the bright blue photoreceptor is certainly bold but these design decisions are successful in my opinion.

Overall - 4.5 - Without relying upon any exclusive elements, I think this delightful Pit Droid looks marvellous. The ability to tilt the head is particularly fun!

This is an excellent build. Recognisable straight away

In my opinion one of the biggest issues with the vanilla Battle Droids is their use of the singular Friends leg pieces. This droid fixes that problem, so very cool!

By the way I think his name is DUM-4.

Finally another Mandalorian reference \(^_^)/

By in United States,

I'm hoping that this means that we'll see more pit droids in a future Mandalorian set that contains the character Peli Motto. It would be a great way to complement all the Tatooine sets we've been seeing lately while adding something new.

It more reminds me of a Cad Bane droid rather than a pit droid. Ha, ha.

I like this one. Can work on my Razor Crest.

Doesn't really work for me. Pit droids are skinny, scrambly little droids with quite long limbs. This guy has tiny stompy feet. And I'd say the blue head is less bold and more bizarre.

Love these little guys. I may swap out the blue piece for a black one, however.

By in Germany,

Was pleasantly surpised this morning and would have rated it 5.0 :-)

This model is superb and so recognizable. Great use of parts. Reading other comments on this, I agree you can put this little droid in so many scenarios/settings. A solid score of 5 I think.

Man, I don't like how the pieces on the battle droids, the regular ones and the super battle droids, are so fragile. I'm having to order replacement parts all the time.

Hey, now all he needs is a giant Podracer engine that he can inspect. From the inside. While it’s still running.

Am I crazy, or has there been a pit droid like this in another set?

Don't tell Mando you're doing that with it.

Now that's a droid I've not seen in a long time... a long time.

I think it’ll take more than a pit droid to fix the razor crest currently.

Nice build today. Inspired by comments on previous days, I built this one in the bag today (while rocking a baby to sleep in my arms, who says men can't multitask?!). Even more fun!

Even though there is still a week to go I can safely say this has been the best Advent Calendar in recent years (if not the best ever). Today's contribution is proof of this methinks.

That's wheat I thought this morning when I opened mine! That bright blue is awkward!

Hi Brickset,
I didn’t know were else to message you so I’m putting it in the comments.
I noticed that you haven’t added a picture for the Tauntaun vs. At-At microfighters even tho Lego has officially released an image of it on lego.com.
Thanks for all you do,
Nick.

Am I the only one who thinks this looks like a really shabby Cad Bane figure?

Once you've seen it you can't unsee it...
