42 projects qualify for 3rd 2023 Ideas review

Posted by ,

The third 2023 LEGO Ideas review period ended this morning, with 42 projects having gathered the requisite 10,000 supporters in the preceding four months.

If previous years are anything to go by, the results will be announced May this year. Before that, the successful projects from the second 2023 review will be revealed in February.

View the projects after the break and let us know your predictions in the comments.

Here's a reminder of the projects that have been approved but not yet revealed:

By in United States,

Let’s see, things I want to make it, A-Team, The Simpsons, Phineas and Ferb.
Things that are probably going to make it… I don’t know, mind is blank.

“Welcome to Krusty Burger, may I take your order?”

SPIDER-PIG!!!

By in United Kingdom,

I really like the Sea Turtle!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Judging as ideas for sets (rather than judging the models themselves which all look quite good as MoCs), I really only like Lego Anatomy.
I think the calendar is a great idea but looks hideously complex to put into a set - in a flip display form like that it would require a lot of stickers (uugh!) or prints (expensive).

There's a lot of same-same stuff in here as previous rounds. Very little has any hope, I think.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I tried to put myself in the mind of the review panel and ask myself, "Which set(s) would be the most likely to make others wonder how that got picked over (insert perceived frontrunner here)."

The sea turtle looks creative and unusual. The Tesla station certainly fits the narrative for cleaner energy, but I suspect it would have done better being generic, or even Octan, electric cars and station rather than something that would have to be worked out with Tesla.

Oh, I hope we get Great A'Tuin!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A-Team made to Speed Champions scale would be nice. Could go with the DeLorian, film based Speed Champs and some of the Batmobiles.
Also need a K.I.T.T at some point...
And a remake of the Mystery Machine.

By in Ireland,

The Rolls Royce may clash with the Creator Expert -sorry, Icons large vehicles but it's a nice idea, even if the project model is a bit crude in places.
Italian Riviera is a nice model that could turn into a set like the fish tackle shop.
My favourite, dated as the series is at this point, would be the A-Team, with two nice Speed Champion type cars. Although with SC branching out into movie cars that might be an issue.

Finally, we don’t need almost a quarter of the ideas entries being Taylor Swift. If Lego wasn’t going to choose it the first 30 times then it’s very unlikely they’d choose it the 31st time.

11. CITY BURGER
19. WORKING CANAL LOCK
25. KAAMELOTT, THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE

Are my favorites but since we are talking about ideas, I don’t have high expectations.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The flip clock seems like a cool concept, and the Galley of Warriors could be another large pirate ship similar to the Imperial Flagship if they were to make it so I could see them doing that.

Personally, I love the wreck it Ralph and would love to see it, and though I haven’t played it yet, the subnautica model would be cool. I love the random sets Lego does from video games like the Tallneck

Thank you for the list of already approved sets on the way - I keep forgetting where we are at nowadays with Ideas release with the competition entries etc thrown in the mix.

David Bailey: [Bailey and Steve are now outside by a newstand] 10,000 numbers?

Steve Dunne: Bailey, you got 10,000 numbers of 10k AFOLs you will never call, never date, never see in the daylight. 10k numbers that exist only to make you feeI, like a guy who can go out and get 10k numbers.

David Bailey: Tonight I'll be the super me.
Steve Dunne: What if the super you meets the super her and the super her rejects the super you?
David Bailey: Then it's no problem.

As well they should. Musks problematic, well, most of his views now, should preclude Lego from coming anywhere near that entry.

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

I really wish Sariel's No.33 Mechanical Clock can success this time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe Lego Anatomy would work? It would fit neatly alongside the existing brick built Minifigures and adds a fun educational twist. There are a few models I like, but none that jump out to me as likely.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My favorite would be Sariel's Mechanical Clock.

I'd buy that Vintage Service Station too. I even love the Twin Towers, as repetitive as that build would undoubtedly be.

And since my previous comment about the subject on yesterday's RMOTD article apparently got overlooked I will re-post here for those interested in CMFs.
Did anyone notice this article?:
https://jaysbrickblog.com/news/it-looks-like-lego-minifigures-series-25-qr-codes-could-reliably-reveal-contents-inside/
Apparently it is indeed possible to discern which figure is in which box of the new CMF Series.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

As someone else stated, only one stands out as a great Lego 'idea': Lego Anatomy. I would certainly buy that. Quite like the A-team for nostalgia, the Italian Riviera for Iwanttobethereness and the Turtle build, because I like turtles (and builds).

I do think the whole Lego ideas setup is a bit past its expiration date and could revised somewhat, but it is still fun to look at.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Am I the only one feeling LEGO Ideas will have soon run its course? It doesn't feel like it's offering the same new concepts and approaches to sets that it once was. We seem to be getting a lot of repetition of subject matters and thematic similarity. Every review seems to contain a mountain of sets that would be popular with rose tinted spectacle-wearing AFOLs but are never going to get selected because of licencing/size/conflict with TLG's own plans, with the most likely contenders able to be counted on one hand. Maybe it's me but these review lists don't generate the excitement they used to.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I enjoy this theme immensely and even more so now that it seems to annoy the regulars.

I think many of the submissions are beautiful and my personal favourite is the Galley of Warriors as I have a soft spot for anything close to a flag ship.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd be here for the Wreck-it Ralph one, because I love that movie and I've been hoping for a while to get my favourite character (Vanellope) in Lego form one way or another... but I don't really see it happening, especially since I think I recall a very similar project failing to pass a few years ago now.

(That said, I wonder if a WiR submission might stand more chance if they didn't always focus on the building, which automatically turns it into a modular-adjacent build and potentially lowers its chances... something smaller maybe, with the kart, a couple of those cy-bugs, and some of the candy scenery, as well as of course those main characters, would honestly be more interesting to me than another large building, while still representing the movie well.)

Otherwise, I dunno. Some I like the look of here - Abu Symbel, the canal lock, and the log flume particularly standing out to me - but, as is often the case, nothing I could really see myself buying? I'll be curious to see what passes, at any rate.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Gosh, it was kind of shocking to see a model of the twin towers make it into this review? I'm surprised lego let the model even get this far instead of just quietly taking it down, especially as a model like this would attract all sorts of unpleasant edgy jokes.

Gravatar

Steve Irwin, man left us too soon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO likes doing brick-built objects. With that in mind, I predict that they will release the microscope set and possibly the NASA rockets. Everything else is of no interest to me, and besides, some of these are quite similar to existing LEGO sets.

Willy Wonka and the LEGO Anatomy are my top 2 picks. Though I'd also love to see the Wreck-it Ralph, Steve Irwin, Abu Simbel, or the Forestman Base too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

After reading all the sets that the LEGO fan community wants to be approved, I can pretty much guarantee that the Ideas board will be giving us...
the Classic Tractor and Stray Kids

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know ideas is about trying to draw in people who don’t normally build and collect Lego, but I feel like at least one of the projects should be a remaster of an old theme if there is one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego Anatomy seems like an obvious choice to make it through... So watch it not get approved XD

I really like City Burger, but I don't believe it'll get through considering all the other modulars that didn't make it.

Flip calendar seems like something they'd make, but I'm not sure how complex the design is and if that would easily translate into a set.

Tractor's pretty cool, but idk if it has a chance.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego anatomy is cool! Also down for more Simpsons sets but guessing they would never do it.

Wreck-It Ralph would be really cool too.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

A few nice ones. JWST is cool but there are a million versions on Rebrickable already. Also, those modular buildings are ridiculously unoriginal. Idea submissions like those should not even be allowed IMHO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Another review full of bloat. Redundant projects, instant no-gos, and underbaked Ideas voted for based purely on fandom. I'll keep saying the vote threshold needs to be raised as long as the review pools are full of untrimmed fat.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

For me Service Station and Krusty Burger. Also A-Team Van is cool and I like IKEA design.

Gravatar
By in United States,

AND THE WINNER IS

Some license and some mundane object (but made of lego!)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Think the only one I’m really rooting for is the Canal Lock. I like the Ideas line being used for more than just a licensed theme that hasn’t been done before, and something as educational as demonstrating practical use of an engineering principle like that fits the bill

That's *always* been the case. From the earliest days of Cuusoo, many if not most of the qualifying projects were huge modulars and IPs, including some IPs owned by other building block companies. It's basically the same now, albeit with a lot more projects based on pop stars. Yet the fact that Cuusoo/Ideas went from a handful of qualifying sets in its early years to more than 40 each round today shows the platform is gaining strength rather than petering out.

LEGO is obviously erring on the side of inclusion even if it might make for a frustrating process for fans. LEGO has declined to increase the vote threshold, which is probably for the best, at least for now. The higher the threshold, the more it might favor recognizable IPs over more original projects. Plus, it would be difficult to set other guidelines in stone, like a maximum piece count or IPs that are strictly off-limits.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Rolls Royce, the classic tractor, classic service station and the Christmas theater are the ones I'd pick first.

Especially the Christmas theater, which has potential and, doing it correctly, lots of play value.

I think that's probably because LEGO has already been covering a lot of the potential in the last 10-15 years. Not only through Ideas, but also through Icons, Creator Expert, Architecture, new licensed and unlicensed themes, indirectly through the Bricklink Designer Program, etc. Both in a sense of refreshing concepts as well as building techniques. If these current 42 projects were the result of the first ever LEGO Cuusoo/Ideas selection, they would certainly have been received with more awe.

Didn't know people were even still suing "white knight." C'mon, play all the hits...add something about an "SJW being triggered" or whatever. We'll party like its 2010.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's fascinating to me how many Ideas projects have been based on popular music videos/concert experiences (IIRC there were 5 Taylor Swift themed projects in the last review). While none of these really appeal to me, I know that each of these artists have vibrant fanbases who would love to see an official LEGO set produced to celebrate their fandom.

My favorites in this wave are the Forest Base and the Sequoia Tree Trail.

I feel like the projects most likely to be selected by TLG are the Sea Turtle, the microscope, and the Steve Irwin set.

In all, this was a strong wave, with a number of impressive builds!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Though I don't see it happening, I really want the modular burger store with that train track portion to make it into production. Adding that element to modulars would be pretty cool I think.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

Although most of them are beautifully crafted, the only set I'ld buy from this bunch is the A-Team van.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I love the idea of a Subnautica set, the crashed Aurora is a strange choice. I would've gone with a model of a Seamoth or Reaper Leviathan, since I think those are much more recognizable from the game.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think the only one of these I might be interested in is the canal lock.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The castle/fantasy ones look cool and I would buy them, but I have high doubts that they win

I would probably buy the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one, and that one I actually see as a possibility

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking forward to A-Team being denied again now that it's once again made the cut /s (sigh...). I love the NMS ship--never played the game, but I've looked at several of the ship designs and that one always caught my eye. Uncannily similar to the Corsair from the Battletech universe, though.

To this I would say: "probably no need to increase the threshold at first; just reduce the time allowed to reach such threshold - i.e. is there a hype around a model? or is it that given sufficient time a creator can reach enough people?" If that does not considerably reduce the number of entries (I think 15 to 20 should be plenty (IMO)) then yes, increase the threshold.

I have long stopped hoping for Idea sets as this is a sure way to get bitterly disappointed. Lego Idea produces a set I truly like roughly every 3-4 years and that is good for the wallet - so no complaints.

But you know what they say about the 32nd time

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd go for the mechanical flip calendar, the service station, or maybe the log flume. The forest base could have a decent shot at it if they tie it in to 21325 in some way perhaps, and the SLS Block 1 and 1B are definitely possible given the success of the Saturn V as a set (though they are admittedly less well-known). The canal lock and sequoia trail are two of my favorites from this list but I don't see them being made into sets for various reasons.

I'm pretty certain the Tesla dealership is not going to happen - regardless of what people think about Elon - based on what happened with the Cybertruck entry back when the vehicle was first unveiled. The Ideas submission (https://ideas.lego.com/projects/feded687-eab3-4409-8e30-ee43db4b63d7) got to 10,000 supporters in what, a month? If that doesn't indicate a strong desire for the set I don't know what does, but LEGO chose to not do it anyway. Maybe it was licensing issues, maybe it was things with Elon specifically, I don't know, but I see that as a pretty clear indicator that LEGO and Tesla are not going to be collaborating on Ideas sets.

Well, not exactly the best round ever, but there are some interesting ones.

41. THE A-TEAM: DOUBLE HEAT - I love it when a set comes together!
33. MECHANICAL FLIP CALENDAR
12. DESKTOP ROCK'N'ROLL

Do very much like but probably wouldn't buy:
3. ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM 1 "PHANTOM OF LOVE - Absolutely needs chrome pieces we just wouldn't get.
8. WTC TWIN TOWERS & VISTA INTERNATIONAL HOTEL 1979 - looks great but seems like a chore to build.
19. WORKING CANAL LOCK
26. CLASSIC TRACTOR
29. SEA TURTLE by legotruman
31. PIRATE TREASURE CHEST
37. GALLEY OF WARRIORS

Some other thoughts:
1. MODULAR HERITAGE MUSEUM - well, considering the last Modular...
4. MOON PALACE - Similar stuff has been on AliExpress for years, at a fraction of the price of what a Lego set would be.
9. GOOD OGEL´ S GARDEN - not a chance with all of the Botanic sets.
10. HAPPIER THAN EVER - Not a Billie Eilish fan at all, but I can inly applaud the creativitty here! This is how you do an artist/band set!
15. HARRY STYLES LOVE ON TOUR 2023 - .....very much unlike this glorified minifig set with some uninspired stuff around it. So this will probably win.
22. STRAY KIDS "ODDINARY MANIAC" - Does anyone know them? And hey, I did know BTS!
16. LEGO MICROSCOPE - Would want to love this...but somehow it just doesn't do it for me.
25. KAAMELOTT, THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE - Isn't this a bit too obscure, at least outside of the French speaking world?
40. IKEA STORE MODULAR - Like the idea, but just doesn't work this small.
42. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - HERE WE GO AGAIN!by 2PPL

By in United States,

another batch of excellent MOCs. As usual, about 90% of them can quickly be eliminated from serious question for all the usual reasons:
- too big/intricate
- subject matter already covered by an existing product line (e.g. modulars, botanicals, etc)
- too niche or lacks sufficient marketability
- duplicative

they do not make alot boats ........

By in Australia,

Italian Riviera and A-team look great.

Please no Muskmobiles.

And the WTC... interesting choice of topic.

We need to be careful with our assumptions in Ideas as some of the more recent selections appear to challenge the previous norms.

By in United States,

I'd want the Sequoia Trail, Italian Riviera, and maybe The A-Team, but I could see them picking the James Webb Telescope. It's been a while since they picked a space set, and that is one of the more famous recent satellites...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nearly all are too big. A large portion of Lego professionalexpertise is how to reduce sizes but maintain functions, style and esthetics. Understandably they do better than hobbyist fans...

But I would hope for smaller, more polished sets.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Don't care for a lot of these, but I'd really like to see the Italian Riviera as a set. Krusty Burger would be nice as well.

As well they should. Musks problematic, well, most of his views now, should preclude Lego from coming anywhere near that entry. "

Politics aside, Musk is also very protective of his branding/IP rights. Note that all of the attempts to make Lego SpaceX happen have also fallen through on Ideas as well.

By in United States,

Petition to just NOT comment on the next Ideas review so that maybe, just maybe, LEGO will actually give us the ones we want?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

2, 9, and 37, but I only see 9 making it through and even that I'm not sure about.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I swear... If they make another rocket ideas set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sets I like (in order of appearance):
- Rolls-Royce Phantom (definitely a top pick for me)
- LEGO Anatomy
- City Burger (probably my second top pick)
- Lego Microscope
- Steve Irwin & Majestic Crocodile
- Pirate Treasure Chest
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 film is my favorite movie, so I'd love to see a set done well)

The Wreck-It Ralph one would also be nice, but I'm not sure if they'd make it an Ideas set (an Icons set, perhaps, seems more fitting, or just a normal Disney set). The WTC Twin Towers is also a very nice build, but I'm not certain if Lego would want to touch the subject matter.

By in United Kingdom,

I rather like 12. Desktop Rock 'n' Roll after seeing its hidden feature. I'd also probably get 6. Lego Anatomy if it gets selected.

Who is excited for yet another modular to come from this???

Mega bloks have a Cybertruck model, sold in department stores, at least in Australia: https://www.myer.com.au/p/mega-bloks-tesla-cyber-truck-in-grey

I assumed it was legitimate and they'd acquired the IP, but maybe they haven't?

By in Netherlands,

Well maybe i like the Steve Irwin and Wonka sets.
A-team is great but i don’t like the size of the vehicles. They are too big.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they won’t pick anything this time

ideas in the recent period was a huge let down, nothing interesting or good
easy pass from me for the next few years

Finally, we don’t need almost a quarter of the ideas entries being Taylor Swift. If Lego wasn’t going to choose it the first 30 times then it’s very unlikely they’d choose it the 31st time. "

Just prepare yourself, soon you have to argue with some random white knight about her greatness. "

Didn't know people were even still suing "white knight." C'mon, play all the hits...add something about an "SJW being triggered" or whatever. We'll party like its 2010."

In your world words and phrases that aren't still trendy are worthy of derision? Interesting theory of language. Besides, Taylor herself is still referring to people as "Kens" and that's soooo pre-Covid.

It was in 2006. Not even 20 years...

By in Netherlands,

I think after 18 years we can make some innocent jokes about some celebrity who died in a rather ironic way. If Steve was still with us, I bet even he would laugh about it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the Sequoia Tree - anything minifig scale with a ‘Great Outdoors’/National Park vibe is a win for me. The A-Frame cabin was a brilliant set.

Some head-scratchers in there.

Hoping the A-Team set wins, also like the Forrest Base, the Krusty Burger set, and the Galley of Warriors.

Ooh, I would definitely have voted for one of those.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Modular Museum and Forest base - those are BEAUTIES! - Lego WILL NOT MAKE IT :)
Warrior Ship - Wonderful display set - they could do it with success :)

harry styles and microscope - sadly this is what we will get xD

Gravatar
By in United States,

So many good sets, but the Moon Palace kinda blows me away.

By in United Kingdom,

Sea Turtle
