Two Nexo Knights sets revealed at NYCC
Posted by Huw,
I thought I would let the Doctor Who review breathe for a while before posting the other big news of the day: Two Nexo Knights -- the next LEGO 'big bang' theme -- sets, and a raft of minifigures from the theme were unveiled at New York Comic Con.
The two sets are 70316 Jestro's Evil Mobile and 70317 Fortrex. You will find pictures of them in the database and of the minifigs at TheBrickFan.
I don't know what to make of them. They are too 'far out' for my taste but then they are not aimed at the likes of me. Presumably play-tests carried out by LEGO showed that fitting castles with tracks and jesters battling with spacemen was a hit with those that they are targeting...
The press release is after the break.
LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS Catapults Into Action
World’s leading toy brand introduces new intellectual property that bridges physical and digital play with building sets, episodic content and digital gaming
New York Comic Con attendees get first-look at story, products and gaming app.
NEW YORK, Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The LEGO Group today announced LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS, a new, original LEGO property depicting a medieval kingdom set in a futuristic world where five young, brave knights “download” special powers to their shields in order to battle the royal court’s evil Jestro and a cast of monsters to restore peace. The story comes to life through LEGO building sets, an episodic television and a digital gaming app that fuels story-driven gameplay. The property launches later this year, with products available starting January 1, 2016. LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS characters, story, app experience and two iconic building sets from the collection will be previewed to New York Comic Con attendees, Thursday, October 8 through Sunday, October 11 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (Booth #1436).
“Inspired by insights to meet the emerging needs of today’s kids, LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS juxtaposes a timeless world of medieval knights with a futuristic twist in a captivating story that invites children to explore LEGO play in a whole new way,” said Casper Thingholm of the LEGO Group. “LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS offers children the rewarding building experiences they know and love, amplified by digital enhancements that merge what today’s kids love: self-expression, strong characters, deep content-driven story and digital gaming.”
Story
Set in the futuristic, high-tech world of the Kingdom of Knighton, LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS follows five young knights in their quest to battle Jestro, his sidekick, the Book of Monsters, and their Lava Monster Army. Heroic knight, Clay Moorington, leads the band of knights, including alpha superstar Lance Richmond, hipster Aaron Fox, Macy Halbert, a princess who would rather be a knight, and Axl, the giant. Together, under the tutelage of Knights’ Academy mentor and Great Digital Wizard, Merlok 2.0, they join forces to defeat the enemy.
Building Sets and Consumer Products
Fourteen richly detailed building sets will be available in January 2016, ranging in price from $9.99 to $99.99. Additional building sets will launch in August 2016. The first two sets are being revealed at New York Comic Con.
Consumer products partners across key categories are also engaged in creating a merchandise program dedicated to LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS, such as publishing and soft goods.
LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS: MERLOK 2.0 App
To extend the story and increase playing fun, more than 150 unique LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS powers – represented as shields – have been scattered across the kingdom of Knighton. The powers can be found in building sets, online, in print and directly in the television content. Existing in both physical and digital form, children can discover, scan and collect varied powers using the LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS: MERLOK 2.0 app. Once added to a digital power collection, children can creatively and continuously find new ways to join the knights to defeat the enemy, in their gaming experience.
Available in late December 2015, the LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS: MERLOK 2.0 app will be available as a free download via App Store, Google Play, Samsung Apps and Amazon Appstore.
Television Series
LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS, a 20-episode, animated adventure comedy series, will debut on select global broadcast television networks as soon as late December 2015 and air throughout 2016. The core means by which children follow the story and get to know the characters, the series follows the constant adventures of LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS heroes and villains. Children will also be able to scan new LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS powers directly from their content viewing screen into their app games, further connecting their play experience.

I'm waiting for them. I liked the concept at first but now that I see them like this I even like more... Well, I'll have to wait until january or later to have the sets here.
Oh dear, this looks like a mishmash of lots of ideas badly thrown together. Fourteen sets available from Jan 2016 seems like Lego are putting a lot of effort behind this but I can't help thinking we will see big discounts on these sets.
I like some of the minifigs but I think as a series I'll pass.
I'd always hoped this day would never come, a new Castle series that doesn't interest me at all. Sad times!!
This looks like exactly the sort of thing their target market would build themselves if they could & will undoubtedly think it's cool.
Not to my taste but I'm not the target market.
Lots of Technic pieces in evidence, as well as some pretty old pieces. Colour me intrigued :)
That weapon the green knight is holding.. it looks like a new piece if i'm not mistaken? Even the ammo looks like a new piece (Not a stud)
These sets and figures look brilliant! I'm more excited for this theme than ever! I wonder if they'll reveal any more in the next few days (since NYCC is a four-day event) or if this is all they have planned.
As I sort of expected (this being Chima's successor), the theme is aimed at older kids than most previous Castle sets. These two sets are aimed at ages 8–14 and 9–14, respectively. I don't know if there's ever been a non-licensed, non-exclusive Castle set aimed at ages nine and up, to be honest.
Of course, I'm still seeing a lot of classic Castle fans call it "childish", even as they wax nostalgic for themes aimed at even younger children. With that said, I've also seen a lot of excitement for this theme from AFOLs in other corners of the Internet like Kotaku, Facebook, Twitter, and Gizmodo, with people praising the uniqueness of a Space/Castle mash-up and the theme's resemblance to 80s cartoons like "Visionaries".
It surprises me that LEGO would announce a theme like this with no pre-existing fan base at an event like NYCC, but it seems like it might be paying off by bringing it to the attention of AFOLs outside the limited sphere of dedicated AFOL fansites.
There's a teaser site on LEGO.com with posters and videos, if anybody's interested: http://www.lego.com/en-us/nexoknights/teaser Amusingly, some of the "ordinary" knights in the teaser videos are dressed to resemble the knights from the Yellow Castle!
These sets look better than Ninjago and Star Wars combined!!! I cant wait!!!! ;D
This could go two ways, either it will be a success like ninjago, or a big failure. I will wait for the final verdict pending my son's reaction, but honestly, I don't like it all.
It really reminds me of the LEGO from the mid-nineties, when you had those weird mish-mash sets with fluorescent colours like Unitron, Spyrius, Roboforce, etc.
I don't get it. LEGO has been releasing so many nice themes the last few years, with good designs and coherent colour schemes, and now this.
Oh dear, its got an app.
The pricing seems fair, hopefully there is one or two there that call to my mind and wallet as must have (currently building two towers made out of Lego, one 12" and another a little bigger, might have them ready by February in my Flickr and as an Ideas project).
Very interesting line up. I definitely will pick some of these up. The figures look great. I could see army building some of them. I love the new visors and emblems. It looks like a Black Falcon nod to the little robot.
I like seeing some new pieces/pieces in new colors. It looks a lot like trans neon orange, which will be great for Ice Planet builders.
And the big black monster villain looks as close as we could get to a Balrog!!!!
Although I don't like how similar the king is to the CMF and the queen is to one of the Chima eagles. It almost looks like the same print...
Ice Planet 2002 meets Galaxy Squad meets Fantasy Era Castle. I LOVE IT.
The design scheme is a bit of a mess, but I can live with it. I love how over-the-top this is... Evil jester with army of demons! Giant Space Knights! Strange portmanteaus of castles and tanks!
And Jestro's vehicle is called the Evil Mobile. Have a feeling this is going to be popular.
I actually like the look of this theme now that I can see the sets, the style of building on show and its mixture with new parts is intriguing!. The only thing I don't like, however, is the target-market attaching of personalities to all the Knights. Obviously letting kids give their own names and personalities to each knight doesn't cut it anymore, as does anything without a companion app. That green knight looks weirdly smug.
Worst theme of this decade
^century
I don't mind the idea of a Castle/Space hybrid series (as said, it does seem very 80s), but these look sketchy. Even the figs interest me less and less, the more I see them.
Not quite as bad as I expected.... 70316 looks pretty interesting! The theme, much to my surprise, is growing on me:)
"Heroic knight; superstar; hipster; princess who would rather be a knight; giant."
Not sure if I'm fond of the characters (names are clever :P), but a few of the sets look interesting.
I like the evil mobile thingy that is pulled by the black demon looking guy. And hover horses? Who wouldn't like hover horses? :D
It makes my eyes hurt.
If I were 8 again I would definitely have to have this! We need some classic space or Black Falcons for the AFOLs!
What an utter insult to the Castle theme!!
It looks like there is a new gold, red, or silver pyramid slope piece (as small as a cheese wedge) usually on top of a bigger slope on each set.
Figures look like M***bloks...
Knighton. Real creative there LEGO, that must have taken ages to dream up.
This is looking like a solid pass for me so far. Looks like it's completely aimed at younger kids. Some of the figures especially the tinyfigs and the new bigfigs combined with absurdly huge weapons, and poor design (The Fortrix looks nothing like it does in the promo) just looks more like something Mega Bloks would make to me.
And they made another version of a stud shooter with a new projectile from the looks of it. Marketing will definitely take most of the burden with launching this series.
Looks decently awesome, although IMO LEGO is making way too many new molds these days. Just look at those figures. Looks like TLG dunked a stamp in ink and smashed them with the Mega Bloks logo.
nope
On one hand I'm thinking maybe cool. And on the other I'm thinking who spiked the design teams drinks with the KK2 acid again.
The concept sounds fun and these look like they have high playability potential, especially the Fortrex. Design and construction wise, yeah, it doesn't look very polished, and the mashup factor is a bit rough. As others have said, though, I'm not the target market and if I was a kid, I would probably be loving it. As is, I do want some of those parts.
The color theme for the Fortrex and knights' vehicles reminds me of Ice Planet 2002, which definitely puts a smile on my face.
Oh dear, it looks like the parts are going to be good, but the sets unappealing. More internal conflict following on from Chima then...
I was always on Castle side I always wanted Castle-space and I'm satisfied. Yes some sets are lacking something, but creativity behind them, great characters and amount of new usefull pieces make up for it!
I will never understand hardcore castle builders- In my eyes Elves and this theme are FULL of MOCASTLE potential!
Some minifigures are fantastic, but the sets........i don't like this serie.
For me, it's not a castle!
Uh oh. This all looks a bit Time Cruisers to me. Kids don't need to be told to combine themes - if it works then their own creativity will do the rest. Mish-mashes imposed by TLG are asking for trouble.
Yeah it's for the core..
-I thought Chima was duff, but look how well that did. -Good thing I'm not a product developer.
Although I probably won't buy them, I appreciate the color scheme and the theme cohesion. I probably would have really liked these as a kid. The chariot especially is really cool and interestingly designed.
One thing that bugs me, though, is that by having more and more specialized pieces, it's starting to look "non-Lego-like". I realize that this might be an inevitability with more new molds all the time, but I didn't feel the same way with Ninjago or Chima. Something is odd that I can't quite put my finger on yet, and looks unnatural.
Edit: I just realized the color scheme is classic Ice Planet. Maybe that's why the colors appeal to me.
Disappointing. Can't say that I'll be buying many - if any - of the sets, although some of the minifigures (mostly the bad guys) look kind of cool. Ah well, at least I'll have a couple years to save my money for the next proper Castle line.
I suspect my kids will lap this up, especially if it comes with the usual marketing force behind it.
Looks like good fun. I can't wait to merge these sets in with my childhood classic castle sets.
Even if my 5 year-old son is interested; a likely pass. Already too many played-with-once sets sitting around the house wasted on themes the kids thought they liked.
I don't like the colour scheme at all but can definitely see the appeal for children. The minifigures look excellent in some regards but I echo the sentiments of a few of the above comments in suggesting that their design does not maintain the LEGO style very well.
At the very least I like the new pieces. The little pyramids are particularly appealing.
I was an avid fan of Castle during the 80s, and I'm pretty sure that my eight year old self would liked this too; certainly more than the 2013 Castle series.
Is this going to be the only unveiling at NYCC? Will we have to wait for the Ghostbusters HQ at some other event?
LEGO is really starting to come up with wacky themes now. First Ninjago then Chima and now this. I wish LEGO would just release another theme like Johny Thunder or adventures theme instead of making all these crazy new themes. That being said I don't hate the look of this and some of the minifigures and new pieces look good, this will be a pass.
I'd always hoped this day would never come, a new Castle series that doesn't interest me at all. Sad times!! (2)
I miss the pastel more organic colored castle sets. Full of greys, greens, browns, reds and black...
The minifigs seems lame...
Looks like some kind of default generic whatever MegaBlocks shit
The colors and design looks trashy!!
When it comes to Lego Castle, I'm old school!
For me this is sad because I feel like they just messed up badly with two of my favorite themes: Ice Planet (from de 90's) and the Castle theme in general...
If it was to make this shit, just bring back Ice Planet with new good sets instead of this..
It's just one more year without my favorite theme, Castle. Sad year 2016...
^ To be honest, I wouldn't think of this as a castle theme at all, rather a pure sci-fi theme with a techno-barbarian Warhammer 40K feel. Almost none of these parts would suit a medieval castle setting, as there are very few natural coloured stone wall sections. those wall panels, along with the new Dr Who Ideas set, give me the feeling that Dark Blue is the new black in this year's sets. With the sci-fi image in mind, I'm starting to like some of these sets, will have to see more before deciding to buy.
The castle on wheels looks a bit... Ah, well, I guess I need to get used to it.
The jester's chariot looks pretty cool, though. And as someone said before, who wouldn't want hover horses?
This Nexo stuff may turn out to be fun, at least in parts.
It's a no from me. Minifigs look OK, but that castle is a mess.
not wowed. but there are some interesting pieces. ^^ anyway, these are for kids. kids will love forts with wheels, castles that flies, joker mobile units that look like gigantic wheelchairs on roids and mechanical horses. lol.
My first thought was 'Playmobil', which is never a good start where construction is concerned. I like how the good vs evil and fantasy angles are taken from the Ninjago, given how the latter is on the verge of becoming an evergreen theme.
Not my cup of tea - but I think younger children will be drawn to it for sure. Older children, though? I think they'll be asking too many questions.
The colours look too bright, a bit like those space spinoff collections in the 1980s like another poster says.
It does look like something I would have built myself when I was 8 - not nice.
The mix Middle Ages - Space Age is not something I like, I like my LEGO sets to be more serious than the stuff I build myself.
If the lack of franchise costs means they are way way cheaper than a licensed (e.g. Star Wars) set of the same size, then it may appeal to uncles and aunts for a Christmas gift, which is why I'll make sure that they get an up to date wishlist without this theme in it.
I think my son will love this. I think it's pretty cool too. The Castle colorscheme reminds me of ice planet.
What a dissapointment. I really loved the Era/Knights, but this is really not my kind of Lego. I'll wait a few years and hope some 'old skool' knights will make a comeback.
Kids can make a mixture of their one. They do combine knights and space and city. SO, PLEASE Lego, bring back some classic sets (invent some new sets, or some village houses) But I'll pass on this one.
This set will definitely become a success series. Kudos to Lego for always inventing and do things outside of the box. Some people find it hard to accept it because the series is a branch of the Classic Castle set which most people have a lot of childhood memory with. Anyway new things doesn't mean bad give it a chance to prove it will be a worthy series in the history of Lego Castle.
I hope the Fortrex can be transform from Vehicle Mode to Battle Station Mode :-D
W0W! Now that I see the pictures (of the set, minifigs, parts, colors, tv shows, etc), I think this is going to be one of my new favorite themes!
(May these Knights remember Gaildor, a awesome series. I'm not joking.)
This looks like a cross between He-Man and Brave Starr. Intriguing.
My eyes, my beautiful eyes. Oh, the humanity. For some reason I'm reminded of the phrase "A camel is a horse designed by a committee". Can see the appeal to small kids though.
I'm apparently one of the few, but there's definitely a few sets here I can't want to pick up! And that's despite everyone calling a specific theme of a toy "childish."
I'm not too disappointed in the lack of "Castle-ness" of this theme. Nexo Knights is Castle the same way that Ninjago is Ninja-Castle: it just isn't, rather it's a sci-fi/fantasy mish-mash. Since it's not really a Castle theme, as a Castle fan I'll pass. But I also agree that the kids will love it just like Ninjago and Chima.
I wish it was more castle with lasers than space knights but I like it. Castle has been uncreative for awhile and this breathes life into it. Also a castle tank is amazing idea!
An a childish theme... from the builders of a kids toy.
It looks like something Mega Blocks would come up with.

It looks like something Mega Blocks would come up with.
Yup. Got that right! It looks awful...still, it'll make Lego a lot of money as kids will no doubt love it...but for us AFOL's, its not good at all...whatever happened to real imagination coming into play?
Euh this is a most, certantly, without a doubt, definite pass for me as an AFOL.
However I do see kids getting all excited about this.
Honestly, I am happy my son is 1,5 years old. Even if this theme survives more than 3 years he will still be to young to really like this.
I agree with the general consensus...great for the kids I'm sure, but doesn't appeal to me. At least it'll save me some money I guess.
The Nexo Knight minifigures look great, but I can't see how I would use them in a MOC, so this theme is a pass. :(
Most people have pointed out that this isnt targeted at the AFOL, and they're 100% correct. While I'll refrain from getting too upset on that front, I will admit that I'm disappointed with TLG's choices.
Castle was always such a cornerstone in LEGO's theme lineup year in and year out. It's really a shame that they've neglected it in the last few years. I think they're damaging their legacy by forgetting about their core audience and their core themes. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just a sign of the times. But something seems very wrong from a strategic business standpoint. And this is a trend I've been seeing in the last few years. There are so many more ways to make the classic castle theme exciting and so many more
building techniques they haven't explored. Dissapointment is the only word that comes to mind.
@Matt Z.: Castle may have been one of the LEGO Group's core themes, but adults were never most Castle sets' core audience. Kids were — in fact, slightly younger kids on average than the audience Nexo Knights is targeted at. And it's possible kids today just aren't as enthused with old-fashioned medieval play as they were back in the 80s.
So many people seem to want to pin this on the LEGO Group for not bringing their A-game with recent LEGO castles. But is that really the case? The recent 70404 King's Castle is structurally similar to the beloved classic 6085 Black Monarch's Castle, but less expensive and with nearly 50% more pieces, more color, more interior furnishing, and more play features. Some people complain that 70404 had too many prefab wall panels, but it actually had an extremely similar ratio of large wall panels to other bricks as 6085 (39 large wall panels out of 996 pieces total versus 25 large wall panels out of 665 pieces). The only ways that 6085 really comes out ahead are that it included more minifigures and horses.
I think it's safe to say that today's kids simply expect more than just the same types of sets as kids from the 80s.
"Visionaries! Knights of the magical light!…"
Likin' the look of those weapons...
two letters: E-W for AFOLs
On a more serious comment, minis are nice, rest is... children oriented indeed
I like space ... I like knights ... but the combo isn't for me. Luckily I know quite a few kids who will be all to happy to own this, so I can still enjoy the building experience anyway :)
Ok sign me up! These look super creative and a lot of fun to build and play with. LEGO at its best!
I agree with Aanchir. The previous castle lineup did't feel like it sold well, at least here in the Netherlands. Sets were being accused of being juniorised, but were they really? The castle wall pieces are around since the second ever castle wave of sets! Were they brightly colored? Yes. Is that bad? No.
I think we will have to wait and see what the sets will be like in the flesh.
Seriously, that tracked castle IS original. And when was the last moving base on wheels with that much inside space, judging from the floor shown in the pictures?
Besides, we are only at the first wave. I bet my hat that the summer 2016 wave will have a larger, grander castle, albeit either futuristic or jestery-demonic. Does anyone remember the initial reaction to ninjago? Do we still feel the same about it whilst buying the airjitsu dojo? Patience people.
Not that it's bad, it's just... meh. I was hoping for another fantasy theme like in 2007, with skeletons, trolls, and ACTUAL knights. This set reminds me of the UNSC Elephant from Halo... anyone else think so? I might buy this set, take off the tracks and wheels, put the minifigs where I'll never see them again, and convert it into a transport barge for a Star Wars MOC.
This is the first time I'll be passing on Castle sets (I've been buying them since the yellow castle when I was a kid). I'm not even sure I think this should be called castle, it's more like the radiated mutant offspring of a castle-space-chima threesome. Seriously disappointed.
Let's get all the grown adults in one place to complain about a children's toy concept idea being ridiculous!
that castle is on tank treads. mind = blown
It looks like the techno-thematic mashups like Ninjago and Chima are proving to be successful in the marketplace. The parts we get out of this theme should help out with the Warhammer 40K MOCs :)
To be honest, if there's a return to classic/fantasy castle themes I'd like to see more detailed builds like what we got with LOTR. The last classic castle theme was underwhelming.
Some of the armor looks interesting, but otherwise a pass for me. But, I think kids will love it. I've watched a group of 9 year-olds try make things like this. It's rather like Ninjago- I like the minifigs, but have no use for the sets
SO excited for Nexo Knights! Seriously one of the more imaginative original series. Castle + Space is pretty darn cool. Sad to see so many collectors poo-pooing it. Try to remember, we're not the target audience for these.
Looking forward to some futuristic fantasy other than Star Wars (and I love Star Wars)!
