Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 12

The release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now just a few days away and today's Advent Calendar model offers a tenuous connection with one of the major characters in the film while also continuing the Prequel Trilogy trend which began on day ten.

The HMP Droid Gunship made its first chronological appearance on Saw Gerrera's homeworld of Onderon during the Clone Wars. There a squadron of gunships cut swathes through the band of Onderonian rebels and killed Saw's sister, Steela Gerrera. I suspect this is nothing more than a coincidence but I appreciate the reference nevertheless.

I think this model looks brilliant. The rounded shape of the missile platform has been perfectly recreated using a 4x4 round plate and the dark blue wings on either side each carry a 1x1 plate with clip which form the laser cannons. A little extra dark blue would have been welcome here but the shaping is excellent and I would be reluctant to compromise that by adding any more pieces.

The head is fitted using a hinge and can therefore be lowered to an appropriate angle. Levers are attached to the sides of the head to represent medium blasters and these can be articulated to point in almost any direction, just like in the movie! They are a little too prominent but this could not be avoided at this scale as the only alternative would be to leave them off altogether and that would reduce the play value as well as the accuracy of the model.

Overall - 4.5 - The mini models continue to be the most impressive aspect of this year's Star Wars Advent Calendar and this an excellent addition to our growing collection.

It misses it main frontal blaster but I can forgive Lego as it would have been difficult to recreate.

I had a snowtrooper in place of today's model. But looking on the bright side. It could have been a Lego Friends 3 piece garish assortment of mismatched coloured bricks masquerading as a build, with a cherry on top to add to the piece count. Phew! I feel lucky today!

Quite accurate for its scale.

I thought it was a good idea, but the front of the head was too long with the guns also. But it is pretty good.

This is a good representation of the Droid Gunship. Shape and colors are accurate. The front is as good as can be for its scale.

It's weird. This model looked nice in the promo picture, not as great when I made it in person. I had the same problem with Slave 1.

This calendar is shaping up to be the best yet! I have my fingers crossed for no weapon racks.
