Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 18
Posted by CapnRex101,
We are now entering the final week of the 2016 Star Wars Advent Calendar and are still ensconced on the desert planet of Tatooine. Today's model takes us from A New Hope to the end of the Original Trilogy where we visit the palatial home of an abhorrent Hutt.
Jabba's Palace has been skillfully rendered using just twelve pieces and it looks great. The structure consists of two towers and a central rotunda in the film, all of which is recreated here alongside some sand dunes. Dark bluish grey is not an ideal colour for the palace but I think it looks fine as dark tan would not offer a sufficient contrast with the sandy base.
These location-based models are often impressive but the vehicles are even more appealing in my opinion as they are a lot more fun to play with. For that reason I favour many of the earlier gifts over this one, although it is undoubtedly well designed.
Overall - 4.0 - The mini models have been a highlight of this year's Advent Calendar and this is a splendid model but it offers little play value and I have therefore reduced its score a little.

I agree with the review. The structures are perfect, but the colors are off. This is still a good representation of Jabba's Palace. The calendar has produced some good models of locations.
I wonder if the dark orange used for the head of Chopper wouldn't have served a much better substitute for the grey parts but on the whole I was quite taken with the build when I put it together with my kids. They recognized it instantly.
I actually prefer architecture type models and this one is excellent. Easily recognizable and I like to just display the really good ones. "Playability" is not an important factor for me so 5.0 for me :)
Still have a project on the back burner to turn the Lego Pirate chess set into a Star Wars chess set, and these little calendar scene bits will be perfect I think for decoration.
I quite like this. Admittedly the colours are a little 'off', but it's still instantly recognisable, which given the issues with colour scheme is actually quite impressive. A charming little build!
I really like this one!
