City Advent Calendar - Day 8

Posted by ,

We enter the second week of the Advent calendar and already we've had 2 minifigures and a few decent mini-models.

Hopefully we'll receive another one today.

Today we have three presents to build. These are a staple of Advent calendars but I suspect no two have been exactly the same.

There's nothing inside the orange one: they are 1x2 bricks, not the new 1x2 panel pieces with sides.

This year the new flower piece is used for the bows on top. It's a nice element, and one you can never have too many of, but in my opinion the old '4-leaf' version was more suited for use as one.

Please make separate category for these articles about Advent Calendars, and then remove them from the main page. They are spamming the Brickset's main page because there are so many of them, so it is hard to find articles about other subjects... I am avoiding visiting Brickset in this time of year because those Advent Calendar articles are completly flooding the site.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a slope piece be used to represent a present before. What could it represent, a wrapped up pair of shoes maybe?

My first thought was shoes, but I think it's actually a red 2x1 slope.

I like that we got the tree, only quite recently, so now we have presents to go underneath it.

Plus, we got three spare five-petal flower-leaf pieces, so there's that too.

These were uninteresting in my opinion. The orange one is ok but the rest of the presents only consist of one main piece and then a flower piece at the top. 1/5

This is why I've never bothered with the advent calendars - too many silly and underwhelming builds, it seem like the ~10 pieces/day budget is just a tad too little to build anything good. I feel the Gingerbread House is everything the advent calendars tries to be - not only do you get enough mini-builds to cover every day of the season, but also a real structure to place them in instead of just a picture of one. Maybe that would be a good idea for a "deluxe" calendar, every day you got a minifig/piece of furniture/etc, and then on the 24th/25th (depending on your country) you got a building as an actual cristmas present.

...And there my posting disappeared AGAIN. It's not a big issue for me personally as I always draft my postings in Notepad (both in case crap like this happens and to have an offline copy), but it's still totally unacceptable how this happens over and over.

Oh! That’s what they are meant to be!

This is my first advent calendar and I am afraid I am not looking to buy another in the future. £25 I would rather have put towards my MOC build. ^Catie

^^ It will happen if you let your 20 minute session expire between loading the page and posting.

They should have included 2 of the present boxes that were in CMF series 18 and maybe some 1x1 cookies or something to go in them instead of these.
