Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 19
Posted by CapnRex101,An intriguing Technic brick appeared under the table which emerged yesterday, presumably so something else may connect with that splendid model today.
Let's find out what that might be...
In fact, we have another minifigure, breaking our pattern of receiving these on every fifth day. Parvati Patil closely resembles her twin sister, Padma, which seems appropriate and this minifigure looks superb. The decoration across her torso and the 1x2 brick that forms the lower section of her dress is exceptionally detailed and closely resembles the onscreen character, with vibrant coral and pink colours.
While these two characters should certainly appear quite similar, I think using exactly the same head is slightly disappointing. After all, Padma and Parvati Patel are certainly not identical onscreen, although they are described as being identical twins in the Harry Potter books. The head does include two expressions though so reversing one of them provides some welcome variation.
Comparing both minifigures reveals the similarities between their clothing. The vibrant coral and pink sections of each dress are inverted, initially leading me to believe that the printing is otherwise identical. However, there is subtle distinction between these pieces. The creasing and metallic silver border has been adjusted, thereby positioning the pattern uniquely on each character. Their matching dark orange wands are absolutely identical though.
Overall - 4.5 - Parvati Patil appears as detailed as her sister but unique heads for each sibling would have been preferable.

Slightly disappointed that they both have the same head, but not surprised.
Was the same with Fred and George in Diagon Alley
Also I seem to believe we’ve only got one figure left, presumably Hermione, so surely we won’t get her on the 24th, considering she’s a duplicate.
If you look closesly, you can see the creases on their torso are also distinct. They are at the same spots, but they curve differently and are of different lengths. Although it's a shame they have the same head, I think it's nice to see lego still release new characters whilst this is the third iteration of the Harry Potter theme.
Nice, nice! :D They both look even better than I'd expected; I'll definitely see about Bricklinking the two of them in the future. Thanks for showing them both side-by-side, too ^^

I think it makes sense; considering that in the movie and book, Hermione's reveal in that dress is a pretty significant point of that scene, and that we see the setting and everyone else before she makes her entrance. It is a little unfortunate, like you say, that it isn't the first time that minifigure has appeared; but from the perspective of the scene itself, I think the decision to save her for last makes sense.

Fred and George actually did have different heads.

I was referring to 2011’s Diagon Alley
Doing a close comparison myself, _most_ of the print appears unique to each character, but some portions of it are not. On the brick, the silver looks identical, while the black wrinkles are not. On the front of the torso, the sash color is just different enough that I don’t think they could fake it by just adding a different set of black lines over top. The black outline of the sash, and the purplish lines on the waist and sash are unique. The silver across the waist appears so unique that it’s what tipped me off to the fact that they didn’t just repeat the entire pattern. The silver pendant, black outline of the neck, and purplish collarbone mark all look the same, but are unlikely to be printed with the same pad because all three of those colors have other portions that are unique. The exposed neck, though, is probably a shared print*. On the back of the torso, the silver print is identical, while the sash color and black outline are unique. The purplish waist and neck wrinkles appear identical, but the same color wrinkles on the sash are not. In cases where part of one color pattern looks different while another part looks the same, I suspect they just copy/pasted part of the design and added the rest from scratch while designing it on a computer. The pads would then be individually cut for each character, but share similar partions of their design.
*Did anyone else notice how many colors they printed for these two characters? Harry got a 3-color head (black, white, accent), a 2-color chest (white/grey), and a 1-color back. Ron got a 3-color head (black, white, accent), a 5-color chest (black outlines, white ruff, red collar, green tie, and some shade of brown for the pattern), and a 3-color back (black outline, red collar, and brown pattern again). Cho Chang has a 3-color head (black, white, lipstick), a 4-color chest (black outlines, silver pattern, purple flowers, and nougat neck), and a 3-color back and brick (black, silver, and purple repeat on both). The Patil twins, however, have the only 4-color heads (black, white, lipstick, and the silver mark between the eyes), the only 5-color chests besides Ron (neck, sash, black outlines, purplish wrinkles, and silver pattern), plus a 4-color back (sash, black outline, purplish wrinkles, and silver pattern), and a 2-color brick (black wrinkles this time, and more silver pattern). That’s six prints for Harry, eleven for Ron, thirteen for Cho, and a whopping fifteen prints each for the twins! I peeked ahead, and the next minifig will be 3, 4, 4, 3, for a total of fourteen. So, for those who are complaining that they just repeated the main characters in the only outfits that were appropriate for this scene, it took 74 print apps to make these six minifigs (70 if you only count one Patil head), five more for Harry’s unique Yule Ball tile, one more for the piano keyboard, and two for the envelope shown on the broomstick present. 82 total print apps for a single Advent Calendar. Oh, and the egg had to be painted gold.

To answer your question from yesterday (comments were closed when I got up this morning), the set you want is 4071. If you compare the prices of the set vs the loose cones, it’s clear that people are importing the set to part out, and trying to sell the loose cones at a profit.
Personally, I got a twin piano instead of the twin sister. Funny.
Wow. I just checked back through the comment totals. Last year Disney Wars generally got more comments than Harry Potter, but (probably as people realized how well the HPAC worked as a complete scene), on the 4th-5th, 11th-13th, 16th, and 21st, Harry Potter came out ahead. This year other than a tie on Day 1, Harry Potter has been lagging behind until taking the lead on the 18th.

So, now that it’s posted, was this what you were expecting? A lot of the Padma comments would apply equally to Parvati, but most people probably got those out of their system four days ago.
@CapnRex101 :
It appears your Parvati head has better print alignment than Padma did. Short of requesting a replacement head, I think you’ve got the best option displayed here, which is to use the open mouth on Padma (it wasn’t as noticeably bad as the other side), and the closed mouth on Parvati (so they don’t match). Also, is that white print in the silver pattern? I didn’t notice that at all on my minifigs. I also forgot to count all the alternate faces. So, Harry would be 3/3/2/1, for a total of nine. Ron is 3/3/5/3, for a total of 14. Cho is 3/3/4/3/3, for a total of sixteen. The twins jump to 4/4/6/5/3, for a whopping twenty-two each (is that a record for a single minifig?), and the one remaining minifig will be 3/3/4/4/3, for a total of seventeen. The total number of minifig prints jumps to an even 100! Total for the calendar would be 108, plus painting the egg gold.
Still blows my mind that these two are actually wearing inverted colours from each other. I have seen that film so many times and could have sworn they were dressed identically
@PurpleDave - Both minifigures do include white highlights. I really enjoy photographing minifigures because those images routinely reveal details that are not necessarily visible in person, including to me!

I mean, it helps that you can do an extreme zoom on a modern digital photo. For metallic prints, they can be tricky to look at in general. The Hindi shows up clearly in your photos, but to my eye it either blends in with the head, or the entire thing is washed out with glare.
Funny thing is, I didn’t see it at all the first day, or even after building the second minifig and posting about it. Then I was checking for the bindi alignment in your photos and caught it. Now I can’t unsee it. It’s clearly there on the box. On the minifig, if you hold it so the silver doesn’t reflect much light, the white circles are very distinct. If you hold it so the silver reflects brightly (which I was when I was counting paint apps), they basically disappear given the combination of colors involved. On black, it might read better.
Today I got two minifigs of Parvati Patil. Similar with carriages at day 4.

Ah, very cool. Thanks a bunch.
Absolutely love these minifigures! They look fantastic next to each other.
When I opened today I thought there had been an error because I thought the Cho Chang minifig was the other Patil twin. And I was using a lamp and could not tell the minfigures were different color.
