Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 3
Posted by CapnRex101,
Two outstanding items have emerged during the opening days of this Advent Calendar. I hope the high standard will remain consistent throughout 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar.
Opening door three will provide another clue...
LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendars provide opportunities to acknowledge subjects matters that would be fairly unlikely to appear in larger sets, such as the Naboo Royal Starship or Zeta-class Cargo Shuttle. This rendition of the Lars Homestead joins that category, becoming only the third depiction of this location after two promotional sets. I think it looks attractive.
The dome-shaped roof looks perfect and I love how 1x1 curved slopes have been used outside, forming the rounded entranceways. Furthermore, these elements are only available in two other sets. The moisture vaporator appears similarly authentic and makes superb use of a tan Technic pin that depicts the humidity sensor on top. However, the building should feature a third entrance for the utmost accuracy.
Overall - 4.0 - Despite providing limited play value, this model of the Lars Homestead includes lovely detail.

Very cool build... I wish i got this one instead of the HP one, but I was too late and it was sold out.
I wonder if this hints that there could be a Lars Homestead in the UCS range to go with the magnificent Mos Eisley Cantina at some point?
Opened this morning and had not a clue what it was, only found out now that you've mentioned it and if I'm being frankly honest never heard of it.
So far its my least fav gift from the calendar so far. The Poe and A-Wing were brill this to me feels like a let down.
It's very cute and well executed, but it seems we really don't have a running theme for the first few days of the calendar.
I always wished they would make a full set of this, and we could at last get an Aunt Beru minifig.
Had to make my own instead: https://ideas.lego.com/challenges/38647143-0192-4352-80ac-61fdfa754ff0/application/62929a84-c3c4-481e-97d2-4b88f5afd5d2
I wasn't sure if this was supposed to be the Lars Homestead or Obi-Wan's Hut.
So THAT's what it is. I assumed it was Jabba's palace for some reason.

How have you not heard of one of the first locations seen in the Star Wars franchise! It’s even the setting for the iconic Binary Sunset shot of Luke staring off into the horizon.
It's a shame that the Zetha Class Shuttle and others haven't gotten a set release.

Don't take it as that as the article mentions that they have yet to make some other highly requested sets.
I thought it was Yoda's hut as the piece on the left look more like a Dagobah tree than a moister vaporator .

Yeah I am surprised to think about it but the Lars Homestead has not shown up much considering how prominent it is in the saga. Its in at least one or two films per trilogy, and we spend a lot of time there in A New Hope. Considering we have got stuff like Obi-Wan's hut I think a Lars homestead would be equally viable, at least with the domed garage/machine shop as a focus.
Luke must be tomorrow then

Thought the same thing. At first I thought @Minifig290 was joking. I mean it's an iconic location and more or less what started it all for Luke. After all, coming back there and seeing what the Stormtroopers had done to his foster parents was what prompted Luke to really decide to take on the Empire. Incidentally, imho this was one of the very few instances where Stormtroopers lived up to their reputation instead of being portrayed as buffoons who can't shoot straight most of the time.
I really admire those who build in micro scale. Their ability to use minimal pieces and yet you know what their design represents never ceases to amaze me. I have to say that, thus far, I am impressed with this year's Advent calendar.
Compared to Poe and the A-Wing, if there was a bright centre to this advent calendar, this is the point it’s furthest from.
So far.
Excellent!

I wish they'd do one that comes with two dark red skeletons.
I would also love to see the Lars Homestead in minifigure-scale, although I am not entirely surprised that LEGO has resisted that temptation thus far because I think it would be fairly challenging to design the interior.
The vast majority of the rooms we see inside the homestead are located underground and I am not sure how they could be arranged inside the structure at ground level. The workshop where Luke watches Leia's holographic message, for example, would necessitate significant scaling down while the dining room and kitchen would probably be omitted altogether.
I thought it was a very fun build, with great pieces. Couldn't care less what it actually is.
I've been very happy with this set so far.
Whoops, I told my son that this was Mos Eisley Cantina.
@AustinPowers:
Maybe they get performance anxiety. It would explain why they manage to blow C-3PO apart just off-screen, but an entire room full of them can't shoot Han when a camera is pointed at them.
Lars?! I thought it was a micro Cantina!

This, combined with people yesterday not knowing who Poe Dameron was (one person thought the character was unrelated to Star Wars, another guessed the character was from The Mandalorian) makes me think there are people who have the Star Wars calendar who don't know much about Star Wars except that it has spaceships and Darth Vader.
With Poe yesterday I thought people were pretending the sequels didn't exist but the Lars homestead is OT stuff. I get people not recognising the microbuild, but not understanding the reference when it is pointed out is weird. You'd think that anyone who bothers to post on a Star Wars advent calendar news item has at least watched the OT.

To be fair, the Homestead is never referred to by name in the movie... nor is the Lars surname until AotC, I believe? If people haven't read any of the supplementary material, they might just think of it as "Luke's home", which could explain the confusion.
I'm pretty sure you're right about the 'not knowing' about Poe the day before being jokes at the expense of the sequels, though ^^

Good point. I rechecked the post and the comment and it's ambiguous if the poster means they don't realise what this is from or just don't recognise the name. And yes, the name Lars wasn't mentioned in the OT, just in the EU (until AOTC, as you said).
On ignoring the sequels... Ugh. Those comments are going to get old, fast. Just from the cover of the calender we know that we'll at least see a porg, Rey, a Sith TIE and D-O. Though, I'm prepared to put money on my guess that the day Rey is in there, it's not "who is this" but it's nagging about her last name. Sigh. I was hoping that on a site focused on toys, we'd get less of the "Disney ruined Star Wars" crowd.

"Surely this should be called Lars Homestead Entrance. I'm not drilling a big hole in my table to make it anywhere accurate enough to be called the homestead."
I'd like to see that happen, actually.
@BionicleJedi:
The Lars name may have been included in the original novelization of the movie. There are some aspects that conflict with the movie, some that got completely ignored in favor of West End Games RPG sourcebooks, and others that did end up getting incorporated into EU canon.
