Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 4

Posted by ,

Star Wars Advent Calendars frequently feature thematic connections across multiple days but none have arrived during the first several days within this calendar.

Let's see whether that changes today...

Luke Skywalker is certainly an appropriate gift following the Lars Homestead, although this minifigure is not particularly desirable. Exactly the same minifigure has already appeared in three sets during 2020 and several others before that. Even so, Luke's clothing matches the onscreen character and I like the bands wrapped around his boots which keep sand out.

However, this repetition is slightly disappointing and I would have appreciated something to distinguish the minifigure from its predecessors. Perhaps an exclusive double-sided head or Luke's white hat could have been provided, especially since a suitable element does exist to represent that hat, from the Scarecrow Collectable Minifigure. Luke does come with a pair of Macrobinoculars though.

Overall - 3.0 - Luke Skywalker is perhaps the best known Star Wars character so I understand why he should appear in the Advent Calendar, although a unique variant would have been preferable.

Dread it. Run from it. Farmboy Luke arrives. All the same. (Except for when he had that sweet poncho!)

I absolutely agree. A less common Luke variant would be far more desirable. Though seeing how this advent calendar seems to be themed around the new holiday special, the inclusion of this Luke makes sense

A bit underwhelmed when I opened this one. First time so far and hopefully the last, although I did spot a battle droid on the packaging...

I don't mind too much; original flavour Luke is always useful.

They could have given him a blue milk moustache then.

I think it’s a solid enough minifig choice. Although this version appears in a number of sets it’s a good way for many to get an updated, leg printed, messy haired Luke. The cantina is a hefty investment and I’m not really into the smaller Tatooine sets since they stopped featuring Sandtroopers (also there’s a limit to how many R2-D2 and C-3PO variants you need in your life, but maybe that’s just me!).

This is where SW Advent Calendars can be a really useful source for recent versions of major characters that may be missing from your collection. I think that if any unique prints or parts are to be designed for the calendar they should go towards characters that have never been seen in minifig form before. Someone suggested alien characters in the comments the other day, which was a good shout.

I think that would have been a great decision, and made this calendar even more enjoyable!

@lamby750 To be honest one of the main reasons I got this calendar was for D-O and ROS Rey.

HPAC 2019 was a rarity with five unique minifigs. Usually you don't get more than the one Christmas-themed minifig that's unique, and even when you do there's a good chance one or more of them will show up in a set the following year. This DWAC is going to have two Christmas-themed minifigs, so don't expect any of the rest to be all that special.

In our household, my daughter has the Lego Friends calendar, my wife Harry Potter and Star Wars for myself.

4 days down and Harry Potter is well in front.
Star Wars is in the middle and Friends has so far been very very ordinary.

And I'm glad it isn't a unique minifigure. Chase rares begone!

I feel like 3.0 is being too kind. This is bottom of the barrel stuff, Luke is always in plenty of cheap sets.

What they should've done is make it a Holiday Special themed Luke, with blue milk. Especially bothersome is that THEY ACTUALLY MADE A MINIFIG LIKE THIS (30625) but they're putting it in a polybag for the videogame (instead of for the game doing a mini X-Wing build like with the TFA game).

My solution is to switch heads between the Luke and Poe in this set - that way a holiday Luke will go into my modest but dedicated Christmas sub-collection, and I'll get what ultimately looks like an average-looking figure in generic Tatooine garb to fill out the background of my ever-growing Mos Eisley MOC.

I would have liked to have received Luke with a blue milk mustache and a carton of blue milk like he had in the Disney+ Star Wars Holiday special. It would have followed the theme better.

They can't do blue milk mustache Luke here because it is already a polybag-exclsuvie for ordering the game. I think it would have been better to have blue milk mustache appear here and have an even more original-looking character with the game. The Skywalker Saga game has arguably the most boring game-exclusive minifigure ever.

I understand the frustration and to me today's gift was kinda boring but my 6 year old son loved it. It's always someone's first advent cal.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

4 of these figures in one year? I remember the time when Lego took some risks with their sets and could do a few waves without the main OT cast, or a few years without X-wings and TIE Fighters.

A welcome gift to me, only have one from the 2017 Landspeeder set.

Notwithstanding the majority of the comments I love this but I will concede that this is the first Tatooine Luke Skywalker minifigure in my collection. Thus far this year's Advent calendar surpasses last years.

They are technically not spoilers, as they are listed on the box. I actually counted, and there are only three builds not displayed on the box.

Yeah it's common, but it's literally the most iconic outfit of the main character of the most well-known film ever, that should be common and readily available for all

If it wasn't for the A wing, I would've thought this calendar could have been based on the Lego Star wars special.... Which would have been a fun idea.

I am very happy with the minifig. My son did say it should have included the blue milk carton.

@BulbaNerd4000 :
They had Harry and Ron with their letter-sweaters that Molly sent them for Christmas. Hermione had gone home by then, so they did the last outfit she was seen in before that scene, which was robes with a Gryffindor scarf. McGonagall is a bit of a cheat, because the only thing that's unique about her vs the Great Hall version is the HPAC version has a single-sided head (which probably works better, given the witch hat has no hair). And Flitwick is different from his CMF version because he actually has a double-sided head, and he ditched the jacket. Dumbledore is the only minifig that's available in another set, which is the Great Hall. So, that's three normal professors, one wintery Hermione, while Harry and Ron are sorta-Christmas-themed.

@i_amtrunks:
At the very least, it would have saved me however much I paid for my copy.

Rebel Pilot, Dagobah and Jedi Knight Luke were seen in the special as well, sure they weren’t as prevalent, but they would be more desirable.

That comes with the preorder for the new Skywalker saga game.

I find I prefer micro builds in the Advent calendars. Gives you a fun mini building experience each day which is what LEGO is about. I think including 1 or 2, unique to the calendar only, mini figures would be better than including 4-5 ones you mostly can get from other sets.

OMG this fig is in so many sets. I actually preferred the 2014 variant.

I agree with you, with the exception that I always like extra stormtroopers for my army (I use them for my Star Wars RPG), and also for the RPG I enjoy alien heads (which are rare if non-existent in advent calendars). Extra regular Lukes, Hans, Reys and such I don't like, they go straight for the spare parts bin when it's the 24th.
