Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 5

Posted by ,

Items from Tatooine have emerged during the previous two days. Another such model seems accordingly likely today, following the example from past Advent Calendars.

View the newest item after the break...

Despite visiting Tatooine on multiple occasions, the Razor Crest represents another change in direction for this Advent Calendar! Din Djarin's antiquated vessel compares quite favourably with the source material, featuring accurate engines mounted on either side of the fuselage and fittingly drab colours which reflect its age. I especially appreciate the splash of dark tan behind the cockpit.

However, the proportions of this model seem awkward in relation to the onscreen vehicle as the engine nacelles appear too close to the fuselage. In fact, the entire craft looks too narrow in my opinion. I do like the laser cannons towards the front though and the detailing across the top is impressive, yielding realistic texture. Nevertheless, I would recommend widening the model with 1x3 plates on either flank, before mounting the engines.

Overall - 4.0 - I love the Razor Crest so would like to award full marks today but the inaccurate proportions of this model must be acknowledged. There is definite potential for improvement.

Don't want to give a spoiler, but yeah, you know what happened...

While I love these tiny models, I think I get as much enjoyment from seeing pictures of them as I would actually owning them. Interesting builds, but not much value as a display model, a play model or a selection of parts

I feel like it was deliberately put in today.

There is no way anyone at Lego would have known. Only way that's plausible is if LucusFilm said "make the RC day 5...you'll know why later". Otherwise pure coincidence.

Regarding the model itself, I agree with the width criticism. 1x3 would do it well...I may try it later. I'm not sold on the method to mount the engines but it's not terrible. Even considering the faults a solid effort and above average gift.

By in Netherlands,

I love it and would have awarded it more, perhaps 4.5. Giving this a 4.0 and basic Luke Skywalker a 3.0 seems like they're much too close together, and docking half a point for the (perceived) inaccuracies seems more than enough.

Yeah, talk about timing! Considering the small scale, I think Lego did pretty well.

Ummm, nice model.

Why are there holes on the side I'm pretty sure that's not accurate

Ah the Cap’n is worried about it being too narrow but I think for the most accuracy it should maybe be left in pieces...

I don't watch the Mandalorian and have no plans to do so either, but it's disappointing to see that some of the above comments fail to properly steer away from spoilers. Even when refraining from outright describing what happens, one can very clearly infer what seems to have happened.

Poor form, lads. I feel bad for anyone who might have had a surprise ruined.

Depends how far into season 2 you are :)

Absolutely hilarious timing with this

Sorry, Capn, but I disagree. I’d give it 4.5. It’s recognizable, I think the shape is great for using 22 pieces or so, and has great parts usage. I would add a 1x1 tile in dark tan on the side for color. It really is a valiant effort, and hey, it’s their first try after doing a minifig version. As to its appearance in today’s window 5, I’m of opinion that it is no coincidence.

The comment section on this review reminds me of that scene from shrek where Shrek and Donkey are cracking short jokes about the bad guy without actually saying that they’re making short jokes. But seriously, this is a great build.

Best build of the calendar so far, the A-Wing is close. Poe is the best gift overall so far.

I wonder if it would look better if it was one stud shorter? The engines would still be too close in to the body, but it might fix the slightly stretched look that doesn't help the narrowness.

I am missing what the significance of this model being released on day 5. Can someone help me out?

People are debating as to whether this is coincidence or not but I don't get it!

Watch The Mandalorian Chapter 14 first (which was just released a few days ago). Then come back.

Anyway, this certainly is an interesting coincidence.

If you haven't watched The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 6, then don't ask.

Watch the latest episode. You’ll get it. You’ll get it good...

So will the razorcrest come to think of it...

Thanks. No have not seen the episode. I generally do not watch SW that is not SAGA, though I have made exceptions. I will be making an exception to watch the two holiday specials, but I don't think I am about to get into another series. Awesome build though. I quite enjoyed building this mini build this morning. Again, thanks for cluing me into the reference.

Sublime design. Definitely the highlight, thus far, in this year's Advent calendar.

You should definitely give it a go. It’s fantastic and season 2 is shaping up to be the best thing SW since the original trilogy.

It was finished in the bag when I took it out this morning

By in United States,

It's drab because it's not painted. Boba Fett's Slave I dated back to the Clone Wars era, and while the paint job had clearly seen some action, it was a fairly colorful ship. The Millennium Falcon also dates back to before the Clone Wars, and has some spots that look rusty (which might be painted on to deceive people into thinking it was in disrepair), but the overall look is pretty bright because of the white paint job. But bare metal is only going to look fresh if you pay a massive maintenance crew to polish and buff the exterior like Naboo clearly does.

I've never watched the show (I'm not forking over for a D- subscription when I own legal copies of most of what I really care about), and I don't really care for the design of the ship (feels too much like the Serenity, and I didn't like that show at all). I agree that the proportions seem off, though, and could have been improved by adding something else to the sides to spread the nacelles apart and bulk up the main hull.

By in United States,

I like this model. Star Wars vehicle builds in the calendar have been looking really good so far. This and the A-Wing are nice. I think a model is a success if you can tell what it is quickly even at such a small scale and fewer pieces.

By in United States,

I think this little model looks great! Since I'm not following The Mandalorian I don't really care if it looks like the on-screen version; it just looks like a really swooshable, if rather large-scale, toy spaceship.

I’ve updated mine with 1x3s and it looks much better. Thanks for the suggestion.
