Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 8

Posted by ,

Two items affiliated with the Sith Eternal have now emerged and another such item appears reasonably likely today, although the calendar has proven difficult to predict this year!

Let's find out what appears next...

7958 Star Wars Advent Calendar introduced an impressive X-wing Starfighter and 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar contains an updated rendition, exploiting modern elements to improve upon the earlier design. The proportions of this model look splendid when compared with the onscreen vehicle and I love the colour combination of white, red and light bluish grey.

The angular nose looks excellent given the small scale and 1x1 round plates with holes are employed to good effect on the engines, improving dramatically upon the model from 2011. I appreciate that the wings have remained unaltered though as they look marvellous, including laser cannons on each wing and a basic folding mechanism. The wings cannot actually close completely but I think that would be impractical on such a tiny X-wing.

Overall - 5.0 - I was already satisfied with the mini X-wing Starfighter from 2011 and this model offers substantial improvements, especially on the engines.

By in Portugal,

I agree on how great it looks, but I'm starting to get a little tired of x-wing miniatures (Being the og trilogy or the new one) I'm happy for the people that never got one, but it feels like a slot wasted when it could have been something entirely new

I’d go as far as saying this is the best build of the calendar, without even having to open the next one 16 days

I don’t have mine handy to try, but maybe switching the wings so that the studs point “inward” instead of “outward” would make them look more “closed.” Plus, when built as shown above, the shape of the element used for the wings puts the laser cannons slightly below the wing rather than above it as on the onscreen vehicle. Going to try it this evening & see if I like the look better.

I'm annoyed that the ingot piece couldn't be stuck on more firmly, but I guess it's not really seeing much interaction.

4.0 for the model in isolation (could really do with another plate or two on the back), 3.0 for recycling and regurgitating the same basic build for nine years now.

i think a color for that one by one circle plate behind the cockpit would have been nice. Blue for R2, orange for R5...just something more to represent the astromech droid.

Nice build but to me it's very similar to past X-Wing builds in Advents, but it just shows how strong of a build it is that a lot of advents and magazines gifts have similar designs to this.

i happen to have a poe dameron version right here by my computer. switched around like that, yup the cannons look better, but the wings close less thanks to the inboard stud. overall an improvement though, great idea!

Now all we need is a better piece to represent R2-D2's dome and this X-Wing will be as good as it gets.

For those who want a retrospective of micro X-Wings, here you go:

The original mini version: https://brickset.com/sets/6963-1/X-wing-Fighter and https://brickset.com/sets/4484-1/X-Wing-Fighter-TIE-Advanced

The original Advent Calendar version, which repeated as a TRU Microbuild: https://brickset.com/sets/TRUXWING-1/X-wing ; and as a foil bag: https://brickset.com/sets/SWCOMIC1-1/Mini-X-Wing-Starfighter ; and a Canadian promo last year: https://brickset.com/sets/XWING-2/X-wing

The ST variant (almost the same with cosmetic changes): https://brickset.com/sets/TRUXWING-2/Poe-s-X-wing-Fighter

And this bulky TROS version: https://brickset.com/sets/912063-1/Resistance-X-Wing

By in Netherlands,

Loving this. This is my third advent calendar (I also had 2014 and 2016, but I had both a year after their introduction on happy sales), I haven't seen an X-Wing yet and they don't seem to be super common. Love the way it looks, definitely a 5.0 from me. Only downside I see is not having exhaust flames but I don't think that's manageable on this scale for an X-Wing.

I always enjoy a good x-wing in the mix. A couple of extra parts would have really made this a 5.0 for me. I'm rating this as a 4.25!

Loved getting this today, especially that new nose cone piece

Another consistent effort today. This year's Advent calendar is truly outstanding I must say.

By in Australia,

Not exactly a big fan, probably a 3.0 for me. I just think it isn’t that impressive or detailed. That’s just me though.

By in Hungary,

This mini x-wing is the best model in this calendar, i think.

@Mister_Jonny:
Earlier this year I designed a vehicle that uses two of the ingots on the front bumper, but they're supposed to be oriented vertically and centered top-to-bottom. The result is this makes them very easy to pop loose with even a slight nudge. I kinda wish they'd designed them more like the modern jumper plate than the 1x2 tile for that reason, but I also use another one on the side of the driver's seat that I don't think could be positioned where it is if the inside wasn't able to freely slide on a stud.

@ResIpsaLoquitur:
The trick part is, while the cupcake top is shaped more like an astromech dome, the added bulk makes it way too big at this scale.

Unfortunately I thought about the same ...

The 2021 minifig-scale X-wing doesn't have wings that can fully close either, so I wouldn't be too harsh on this little guy.

As CapnRex pointed out, this is the first time since 2011 (!) that a classic X-Wing (!) appears in a SW advent calendar. I consider this slot well spent :)
