Marvel Advent Calendar - Day 14

Posted by ,

An appealing Mantis minifigure was included in 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar yesterday, perhaps heralding the arrival of items associated with the character today.

Let's open door fourteen and see...

On day eleven, we received the Benatar's detachable space pod and I wondered whether the Benatar itself would arrive in the coming days. A microscale rendition is indeed provided today and approximates the shape of its source material, although the curvature of the wings appears strange, differing from the onscreen vessel.

The articulated thruster booms on the back are nicely integrated and I like the trans-light blue pieces, but their construction is rather fragile. Moreover, I was disappointed to find there is no means of combining the Benatar with its pod from a couple of days ago, even though they are roughly to scale.

Overall - While not bad, I find this recreation of the Benatar unremarkable beside the complex microscale vehicles from 75340 Star Wars Advent Calendar.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No! It's a robot avian dinosaur in flight!
But it's also kind of a bird and a plane because it's a robot avian dinosaur!

The Jurassic World calender continues to defy attempts to be defined by one subject.
Maybe they had robot avian dinosaurs in flight in Parts and Re-Creation? I'm pretty sure there were none in TLM2 besides dinosaurs piloting space planes.

Jokes aside, I may try to reimagine this as an alien bird for my personal sci-fi setting, thanks to your post!

By in Australia,

So at this point, they'd just given up trying, and were just randomly grabbing handfuls of parts out of the parts bins in the factory, right?

I thought it was a desk from the first picture. D'oh!!

I was hoping the colors didn’t indicate this was an attempt to recreate the Benatar, which should be wider and shorter, with a much less C-shaped hull.

They made the ship and pod but not combinable. Shakes head...

Today we got our first transformer - Benatar - to Christmas Angel - just stand it up on it's feet....

Hi Guys! So sorry I haven't been active here over the past week. I am back now! I like today's build! I think that it is great to go along with our days so far.

At least the minifigs are good.

You'll need to pick up 30525 "The Guardians' Ship"! It comes with the escape pod already.

It's not a bad little build... a lot more inspired than the other ships we've gotten in this calendar.

@bgruner:
30525 also doesn’t look like it’s trying to hide in a bowl of fortune cookies.

You could attach the wings with only one stud and pivot them out a bit, that'd probably look a bit better. More delicate, maybe why they didn't do it that way officially?

I'm beginning to regret having bought this Advent Calendar. I knew it was going to be sparse after seeing the pictures of the included contents but I wanted the Minifigs & food parts. Since I'm not a big Guardians of the Galaxy fan I have no desire to purchase any of the related sets just to get some of the Minifigs. Glad I didn't pay anywhere near full price for any of the Advent Calendars this year.

Better than the tool rack, turkey and box of minion eyes we've had so far...

By in Australia,

After seeing the build on the box, I had expected to be disappointed when I got to this, but even then I hadn't expected it to be this bad. Aside from the colour scheme, the build barely looks anything like the Benatar, and there's only one set of wings.
While I don't necessarily hate this advent calendar (yet), I feel as if it is a bit of letdown, especially comparing it to this year's Star Wars calendar from the reviews on Brickset.
Nevertheless, I look forward to getting Drax.
