Marvel Advent Calendar - Day 15

Posted by ,

The microscale Benatar which arrived yesterday was reasonably effective, albeit less so than the analogous microscale designs found in the Star Wars calendar.

Another such vehicle could be attempted today...

We actually receive an item from the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special today. While on her mission to Earth, Mantis becomes enamoured with a decorative candy cane, which is represented here! The ornament is oversized beside minifigures, but captures the vital shape and colour bands of its source material, so I am fairly satisfied.

Overall - This model is relatively basic, but I am pleased to receive something from the Holiday Special today.

Anyone else not seen the special and thought this was the weirdest and dumbest inclusion in a *Marvel* advent calendar ever? There’s gotta be at least a few kids around the globe who think their gift today got swapped with the city calendar or something. Though if there’s one thing that I learned from these calendars it’s that they should be for die-hard fans as half of the HP calendar this year is just a bunch of incohesive brick stacks for people who aren’t very deeply invested in the universe.

Then again, it’s still a guardians holiday special calendar that’s supposed to represent that special, so I don’t see the issue here with it representing something from the title literally on the box.

What amazes me is the fact that SW and GoG are both licensed, both Disney, and cost the same. Last year, Star Wars flopped and Avengers was one of the best AC's ever. This year, it is completely the opposite. I do not see how both designers could have the same budget and we get such a discrepancy in quality. Then again, I could be wrong. There could be something behind doors 16-24 that will make me think it was all worth it. Something like a rare minifig or chrome parts maybe?

Mantis' candy cane! I'm probably the only one delighted with this build.

A candy cane? Nah, a disappointed stick.

If only this calendar had a GoBot for Drax.

So this is not a human?

@mr_Fikou:
It’s not a box of junk, or a tool rack, which set a really low bar. This may have tripped over that bar, but it did go over.

@stevesheriw:
AC designers rotate annually, I believe. So, the designer of this year’s SWAC is known to loathe putting gun racks in the ones he designs, which tends to win points right off the bat. He also designs good mini models, so if we ranked the SWAC by year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see he swept the top of the list. Other designers seem to struggle with inspiration, and their calendars get a lot of grief for how much feels like filler.

Where is Drax's Funny Little Man?

I totally did not think about Mantis's Candy Cane until reading this review. Now I love it!

SPOILER SPOILER I didn't know funny little man is in this. This is for Mantis.

By in Netherlands,

That's a very christmassy looking trumpet. And it's missing some parts. Maybe we get those tomorrow?

Pretty cruel to include this with all the one armed dinosaurs the Jurassic World calender has given us so far.

But I'm pretty sure this is for yesterday's horned rocker girl human dinosaur hybrid. No idea how she'll wield it, but by process of elimination I'm pretty sure it must be her instrument.
Who would have thought she'd also play giant christmas trumpets?!

Also, is this the first christmas-y build in this advent calender or what?

@Binnekamp:
The original trumpets didn’t have valves, and could be played with one hand. The closest modern equivalent is the bugle, which is curled into a more modern-trumpet shape to make it more compact and easier to transport. The old-style trumpet was straight and often featured a banner that was designed to hang from it.

I haven't watched the holiday special and didn't realize what it was until I bought the advent calendar. I will say most of these builds are lost on me.

Finally something Christmas-y!

I got an error on my calendar again, just like on day 3 when I received a white sled with a green bag instead of the guard drone. Today I got Drax, even though the door has the image of the candy cane.
