Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 5

Posted by ,

The response to yesterday's Whomping Willow was very positive, hopefully demonstrating the potential of these microscale creations through the remaining three weeks.

Read on for day five...

An enormous statue of Salazar Slytherin dominates the Chamber of Secrets, inspiring this model. The hollow eyes seem slightly odd, but I like the 1x1 quarter circle tiles forming a flowing beard, with the Basilisk appearing from between these elements. Ideally, the snake would have been produced in another colour to represent the Basilisk, although sand green or olive green would conflict with the base.

Overall - Considering its size, I think this rendition of Slytherin's statue is quite effective.

This will result in discussions about illegal building techniques

By in Norway,

I think you're going a little easy on this model, Cap. At least it was a real letdown to me after yesterday's excellent build.

Illegal technique where? I don't see it.

Perhaps this was the discussion?

Is it the quarter circle tile clearance from the Lego logo on the 2x4 plate studs?

They used a technic brick which is a fraction of a millimeter higher for stud logo clearance, so nothing illegal here.

I loved the scene where Harry gets his wand from the tusk of an elephant.

By in United States,

The basilisk in the movie is essentially gray, so the color seems fine to me.

The elephant is not nearly as good as yesterday. Haven't opened mine up. Hopefully, it looks better IRL.

Thanks for that. I thought that might be the reason they didn't use a brick with studs on the side.

What exactly is that elephant smoking?!!

Seriously, not great. Now that I've built it, underwhelmed. Need contrast with snake and better sculpture. It looks like an elephant.

Yet, great parts! So, there's that.

@greenhorn:
No. Claiming it will result in a discussion of illegal techniques will, though.

@vizzitor:
It’s not like they had a choice. There’s no System equivalent to this brick. They just recently introduced the first brick that has an off-center stud with the 1x2, which wouldn’t leave a way to attach the mouth. A few years ago, the only way they could have made this work is to invert the Apollo stud, since the friction half-pin didn’t exist yet. The annoying thing is that same half-pin is available in dark-bley, which would match the basilisk, but I guess they had to stick with the primary locked color since it’s hidden from view.

By in United States,

The book described Slytherin’s statue as looking like a gorilla so it’s not far off.

By in Netherlands,

It looks like it's slurping up the snake.

Kind of reminds me of the Islanders statues, but even less serious looking.

No, clearly it's a tree trunk. Wait, no, it's a rope!
