Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 19
Posted by CapnRex101,
LEGO has hardly explored The Deathly Hallows, so the remaining six days in the calendar could be very interesting, perhaps presenting scenes never portrayed in LEGO before.
Find out after the break...
Hagrid's motorcycle from the Battle of the Seven Potters has indeed never appeared in a LEGO set before, which is remarkable given the usual tendency towards vehicles. Building an accurate motorcycle at this tiny scale is challenging, but the front and rear wheels look reasonable for their size and I like the simple headlight mounted on the front too.
The sidecar is also recognisable and includes a trans-orange flame, which works nicely, while the dark blue roofs underneath seem quite effective. However, I think the motorcycle and sidecar look odd without any occupants, so perhaps the designer could have integrated Hagrid and Harry, each represented by a couple of 1x1 round plates.
Overall - Hagrid's motorcycle and sidecar looks quite good, but I think its occupants were needed at this scale.

I didn't miss Harry or Hagrid - I think this was a very effective model! Artful, even. Crazy that they've never done this scene before, but maybe we'll get a large scale version now... They've shied away from all scenes with Death Eaters so far in the reboot (did we land on calling it Harry Potter III yesterday?), but I hope that might change. Hedwig dying is probably the most problematic part of this scene for LEGO, though...
I'm genuinely surprised they finally made a model of it! The discourse from earlier this calender (or was it at the HP set reveals) reminded me of the motorcycle's potential for a build, and here we are!
Ar those waves, or roof tiles?
I'm not sure why lego is so hung up about the death eaters and hedwig dying. Characters die all the time in Star Wars and each major death with a duel attached to it has received a set at one point or another that all but represents the deaths. And we've had death eaters before in the 2010-2011 HP theme (Harry Potter II?). Lucious Malfoy appeared with his mask in a 2005 set and in a 2010 and 2011 set. The 2007 Hogwarts Castle came with a generic death eater, as did the 2019 Rise of Voldemort set. The latter is even from the current iteration of Harry Potter!
Not to mention the death eater dummy in the Order of the Phoenix Room of Requirements set (the previous one).

They could be waves or even clouds, but I picture them as roofs. Regardless, they certainly offer some dynamism to the model.
Isn't the side car on the other side of the motorcycle?

I’m guessing Hedwig’s death is viewed a bit differently because it’s a death of an animal and specifically the death of a pet. They’d likely consider such an event a bit more “real” for a child than a Space Wizard getting shot by a laser.
Possibly the same thing with the Death Eaters - I’m reminded of Kenner changing the name of “Death Squad Commander” to “Imperial Gunner” back in 1978. The Death Eaters are basically Magical SS Officers and that might veer a little too close to reality for them these days.
Not saying I agree with both, and the rebuttal to the second point is obviously “But they literally made Nazi characters in the Lego Indy line.” Lego is consistently inconsistent with their standards, but again maybe because HP is viewed as more of an “all-ages” line while Indiana Jones is basically teens-and-up. IDK!
I honestly didn't know what this was when I first saw it. First impressions were of a farting duck riding the waves....hmm...
Hey, we can finally talk about this! I remembered that there was a Hagrid’s motorcycle, but when I went to look up what year it came out, I realized we
Hadn’t got there quite yet. I actually turned Wolverine’s motorcycle into Hagrid’s, but then you have to make Hagrid a standard minifig. I also can’t make the sidecar the correct color yet.
@J0rgen:
75965 included a generic Death Eater, plus Pettigrew was also a Death Eater.
Of course they could avoid Death Eaters by doing “arrival at Privet Drive” with a baby Harry.
@PurpleDave I know. There are also characters who are Death Eaters in the Ministry of Magic set. The anomaly of them making the KKK Death Eater from GoF makes the absence of silver masked Death Eaters even weirder.
The biggest head scratcher of all is how much LEGO loves oversized motorcycles for minifig play sets and how this one actually would make a ton of sense, lol.
You guys are extremely good! My description of this would be: nondescript item consisting of a free-style assemblage of random parts.
At best, maybe I could up come with: alien spacecraft about to land/crash at sea - but I would have a hard time associating this with HP.

And then could maybe get McGonagall as a cat like in the movie when she transforms when Albus shows up. Maybe something like the sonic screwdriver to represent his deluminator. Plus yeah, Hagrid, motorcycle, and wee baby Harry.
I still don't understand how it is Sirius Black's motorcycle, yet fits Hagrid no problem. I realize he is half giant, but he seems he'd be too big for the motorcycle also.
Problem with making this into an actual set is that you would have to redesign Big Fig Hagrid to get him to fit
Where da people at?! Good set, nice parts pack. Missing some dudes. Would love a minifig size.

Yes it should be on the left hand side as here in the UK we drive on the left of the road. Although for the rest of Continental Europe where they drive on right i it is correct. Hence that the sidecar on the right is known in the UK as being a "Continental Sidecar"

There was a Death Eater in the graveyard but aside from that you're correct.
(I doubt "HP III" is gonna happen because people will just confuse I, II and III with the first three books/films. It works for classic Lego themes because they don't have sequels/episodes.)

Europe driving distinctions aside, I think the callout here is that this model inaccurately depicts the sidecar on the opposite side to what appears in the film.
At last! This AC is back on track! After the lackluster pensieve, GoF, and TW Cup I love getting the microscene. Absolutely no clue what it was until I put it together and realized the flame element was the motorcycle booster. Looking forward to tomorrow. A nice build would be the Lovegood’s rook-shaped house.
@Sethro3: Sirius probably had to do some repairs after he got it back from Hagrid. Or heck, maybe it was magically reinforced.
@TheOtherMike:
Well, he was dead the last time we saw Hagrid riding this, so…
@PurpleDave: And we never did see him using it in between the two times we saw Hagrid using it...
@TheOtherMike:
And he was in prison the first time.

Was he? I don't remember if they spell out the timeline of when he got framed by Pettigrew. Harry got delivered to the Dursley's within a day of his parents dying, so it is quite probable that Sirius was still free. Especially as Hagrid had only just borrowed it off him to deliver Harry there.
@Miyakan:
Well, maybe not. The order of events is apparently that Sirius showed up at the Potter home to find it destroyed, gave Hagrid his motorcycle to spirit Harry away, and then chased down Pettigrew who faked his own death to frame Sirius. He may have been arrested before Hagrid actually delivered Harry at the start of the first film, but there wouldn’t have been time enough to conduct a trial.
