Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 20
Posted by CapnRex101,
Our first item from The Deathly Hallows proved enjoyable, featuring Hagrid's classic motorcycle and sidecar. Hopefully the second such model is equally satisfying today.
Find out after the break...
Home to the Weasley family, the Burrow appears throughout the Harry Potter series and is ideally suited to a model of this scale, as its jumbled structure is easily recognisable. The combination of tan and medium nougat elements looks good and I like the red roofs too. Admittedly, this creation lacks the irregular angles of the onscreen building, although you could position the top half slightly askew to present the desired effect.
Overall - The Burrow looks as charming at this scale as it has at minifigure-scale twice before.

Knew this one would come up eventually; it’s visible in the box art! Thought it might have been Half-Blood Prince but I suppose it also fits here as the site of Bill and Fleur’s wedding.
Though speaking of box art, noticing some of the imagery for the calendar includes a spinning top (presumably part of the game the calendar enables), is that behind one of the doors or should I have found that already?
Unnecessary bragging rights: I met the actress who plays Ginny Weasley earlier this month at a fan convention. I asked her what it's like to have your own Lego minifigure, and she said it's pretty weird. (Apparently she did NOT know about the new UCS Hogwarts Express and wasn't aware that she's now represented in adult form.)

If like previous years it'll be behind door 24
It's a good likeness, if a little bit small. I'm not sure it fits best with Deathly Hallows Part 1, but what does, really? I guess a significant part of the screentime was spent there. Wasn't the escape from Gringotts in Part 1 too? I wonder if we'll see it or the dragon sometime.
Like the motorbike, I'd love to see a modern take on Gringotts with the dragon. Although in practice it will probably be another titanic model again.
@kacie
Will that be alongside the minifig?
@Binnekamp
Gringotts is actually in part two, part one ends after Malfoy Manor and rescuing Griphook, who then helped them plan the heist

At least this time the dreidel is in middle of the appropriate holiday :-P
(Happy Hanukkah to anyone else on this site that celebrates :-))

At least this time it's more appropriately dreidel shaped!
Somehow it looks too…precise. Perils of the scale, but aside from twisting the top as suggested, there aren’t a lot of options given the size restrictions.

I think we'll only be getting 1 minifig for the 2 deathly hallows films.

Well there's something you must ask yourself, what exactly is a minifigure? Is it just the standard design, or does Slughorn as a chair count as a minifigure? Are squirrels or cats or dogs or owls or anything like that a minifigure? What about a frog? If we got a chocolate frog, would that count?

Slughorn is not a minifigure in that configuration. Per an earlier discussion, a minifigure requires at least two standard minifigure parts (head, torso, or legs). Slughorn is a head on bricks. (I am not clear if a torso with a Chewbacca head and mermaid legs counts as a minifigure.)
@kacie:
HPAC 2019 had three students, three faculty, a statue of the Architect, and a snow wizard. The last one wouldn’t count as an official minifig, but could get cataloged as one on Bricklink. HPAC 2020 just had six students. And HPAC 2021 had four students, one muggle student, and one goblin (wow, all six with short legs?). So, seven has been the max for minifigs by the legal definition, and eight if you count snow wizards. However, based on the way the game is being set up, each of the eight movies should end up with two scenes and one character, minifig or otherwise. I would say then that Slughorn counts as a scene for game purposes, a minifig for Bricklink catalog purposes, and a character for legal purposes.
@Randomness:
For game purposes, Snape is the character for that film. Not only is he an actual minifig by TLG’s definition that was set forth for legal purposes, but the pattern has consistently been scene-scene-minifig for the first five films.
@ResIpsaLoquitur:
The “two of these components” thing is a legal definition, used to defend their trademark on the minifigure. Stretch the definition too far, and they risk having their trademark claim be struck down in court. For stuff like R2-D2, they instead refer to them as “characters” so they don’t invalidate their own trademark. The fan community cares more about convenience, and wants to be able to look up R2-D2 the same place they can find C-3PO.
BTW, depending on how strictly you define the “legs” requirement, one could argue that Dobby, Griphook, the Ewoks, and Yoda are not minifigs because they have neither a standard set of articulated 5-plate legs, nor a standard minifig head. Or the same could be applied to any pirate captain who has both a peg leg and a hook for a hand, since neither of those assemblies conforms to the standard.
And Merbacca would only count if the tail fit over standard legs, or the Wookiee hat fit over a standard head. Since no form of either of these parts allows for this, he’s just a crime against humanity.
