Wonder how the back looks like...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd like to know what the reverse side looks like. Still, not my cup of tea.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This would be an award-winning MOC at a Lego convention. It's very unusual as a set though. I'm looking forward to the review.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yep. That is a shield. Side note- Lego is getting pretty good at covering up gaps in circular builds! The Globe showed innovation and this really takes it to the next level!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love Captain America, I love LEGO, but some objects will just never be a good fit to adapt to a LEGO set. Thor's hammer was already a little too close to that threshold for me, this tips over into no-thank-you. What's next, the Tesseract? Big, simple, flat, undetailed, shapes just aren't great.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Before the cries of "who asked for this" come raining down, it's worth mentioning that the finished model really does look great. Lego has used assemblies of sloped plates to represent spherical shapes in past sets, but this is by far the cleanest, and with the least gaps. Regardless of if you feel they should have made this set in the first place, I'd say they at least did it right.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You can se the back of the shield on the Lego website if you go to the 360 video on its product page (nothing special, just behind the scenes engineering, not like the back of the actual shield with a handle)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I won't be buying this, but it does look really good! Great design TLG, but for $200, I just can't swing it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Now, €210.00, that would be over the top.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks good. But tedious build, I would imagine. Not my thing though.

The lack of a usable handle on the back of the shield seems like a strange oversight. What's the first thing you're going to want to do with this shield after you finish building it? Hold it up like a shield (or possibly throw it at something like Cap does, but that's not recommended).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can you actually weild this like in the movies? If so,then this is awesome

Edit:No,you can't...That's disappointing for 200 Dollars.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

it's an interesting result as a build but I find it remarkably boring to look at.
And considering how tediously repetitve 21332 The Globe was to build, I don't want to think how this one will be xD

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just don't get it. It's big for the sake of being big. It's boring to look at. I would be very surprised if it was any fun to build

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't give two craps about Marvel anything, but they did a great job on this shield. Looks fantastic!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I get that it's a display piece, but the lack of handles on the back so that you can hold it like Captain America is disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did they incorporate the wall hanging element into the back structure? Seems like it would be an awfully repetitive / possibly boring build but I can't deny the end result is very nice and clean. It would compliment Thor's hammer from a few years ago. Seems like a limited market for this and the price is awfully high for what you end up with. Time will tell.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A build for the same people who enjoyed building the Colosseum :D

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Jeez. Things are starting to get out of hand.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ Nah, they'd only be getting out of hand if they also made a set for Cap's first shield, the one in the touring show that isn't round. Then there would be two of them!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the look of the build although it's obviously going to be super repetitive. I do wish it could be wall-mounted or held like the Thor's Hammer set though.

I'm not impressed with the minifigure at all. I think D2C sets should have high-end exclusive minifigures. Themes like Star Wars get great exclusive variants (printed arms and helmet for Mando in 75331) or niche characters in playsets like Mos Eisley. Marvel fans can't even get leg printing on a single Captain America minifigure in a $200 set? This figure should've been an exclusive variant like the Stealth Suit from Winter Soldier but if that wasn't possible it should at least be different from a minifigure in a $10 4+ set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

OMG, thats a lovely finished display piece but... that has to be one of the more boring repetitive builds I've ever seen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nope. Not for me.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Hard pass on this one because of repetitive build. For that price range you have sets with more interesting building techniques.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Like Thor's Hammer from last year, this is an easy overpriced 'no thanks'.
The lack of a functional handle just makes is a shelf sitting dust collector :)

I'm sure some folks love that kind of thing, it's just not for me.
Plus I can get all the GOTG3 sets and some other Marvel stuff on Amazon for the same price.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks nice, but bagsy I don't review it....

I think CapnRex101 will have that honour - hope he has some strong coffeee to hand!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it should've used tiles to give it a smooth appearance instead of studs on display.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good work on adding the back view, I was trying to work out where all the pieces went but it seems deeper or should I say fuller than I thought.

Lego have done a great job with this but maybe they were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should, as Ian Malcolm would say.

@MegaBlocks said:

Sure. Because 200 euro was too low apparently and that would definitely make it 300 euro or something. And since there aren't a whole lot of tile wedges it would look worse at the seams between wedge plates too

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the shaping and size but unlike Mjolnir which you can hold and play with (and fun little Easter-eggs inside), this has no straps on the back to hold it.
Was hoping it was fully detailed front and back.
But being a big Captain America fan I might pick this up.
I know there’s another one out there by a pro moc builder. Gonna compare the two.

Gravatar
By in United States,

And with all that said, to celebrate this LEGO triumph in shaping Cap’s shield…sing it with me!

“When Captain America throws his mighty shieeeld,
All those who chose to oppose his shield must yieeeeld!
If he's led to a fight and a duel is due,
then the red and the white and the blue'll come through-when Captain America throws his mighty shieeeeeellllddd!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's an impressive build but I'd always buy a replica for something like this. Not being able to hold the shield is just too limiting.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No handle or wall mount seem like such a stupid oversight to me.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Decent MOC idea, but not a good move for a set. I can imagine this being one of LEGO's most boring sets to build. And pretty darn expensive too.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Desperately needs an arm strap.....

Gravatar
By in Germany,

First page of instructions be like "300x"

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very cool to look at, however I think they'll be forcing prison inmates to build these as a form of punishment.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Wow - not even the box art manages to make this look exciting. The unfinished backside is bad and the lack of handle unforgivable. It's only about two-thirds size, according to Wikipedia the shield is supposed to be about 2.5 foot/76 cm across, while this model is slightly less than 60 studs/48 cm. Sure, full size would mean double the price, it's just that with things like this you have to go all-in, halfway just won't do.

They did a good job at recreating the shape, but the studs looks a bit rough when the smooth surface is such a prominent feature of the actual shield. Of course I never had any plans to buy this to begin with, so I guess my opinion doesn't matter that much anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

must be very tedious to build XD

Gravatar
By in United States,

At least the instructions should be really short. Assembly A (18x), Assembly B (18x), link A + B, add star, build stand, done.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Ah yes, another exquisite model to put near my black panther bust and thor hammer.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thought the back would have some hidden Captain America vignette, a bit like the Pacman/Atari consoles…….. might have made it a bit more interesting

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

So just a frontal shield.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like how it looks, but it seems like a very repetitive and utterly boring build. And it obviously uses a lot of pieces (and not just tiny ones either) which in itself should make the price seem reasonable....but I have a hard time imagining *anyone* pay €200 for this. Only for the most hardcore fans.

My first thought was along the line that the Colosseum has some competition for the most boring build.

I think the studs are one of the few positives about the set. At least it looks like a Lego version of the shield.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@huw or @CapnRex101 I know you guys do reviews on just official LEGO products, any thought to compare this to the already released shield made of LEGO built by a group that builds life size replicas ? ( I don’t want to directly list their name, as I don’t want to imply endorsement, but google can provide it )

Gravatar
By in United States,

You commenters are funny considering Mjolnir is Cap'n's weapon considering End Game and Thor's preference for Stormbreaker.

Also, this shield doesn't need a strap on the back considering it is only there to prop up laser beam devices to create new elements. Just ask Tony.

In other news, yes, this is an unexpected nice looking set. I can't swing as much money as LEGO puts out, but it will be on my list as a future maybe. I'll try to wait for a sale (if possible) considering that's how I grabbed Mjolnir the first time around.

I was somewhat hopeful for this, too, but it doesn't look like it from the limited angle shot of the rear. I would have assumed an image of it hanging on the wall, as well, would have been included, but the rear maybe just isn't strong enough to hold the weight from the center? I would be interested in hanging it if it was an option.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don't understand this, I can get the real thing from Amazon for less than 40$.

;)

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I like the engineering of this build and sheer audacity of the chosen subject, it's a bold move from Lego. But, as I am not a fan of Marvel nor repetitive build its an easy pass for me.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

If they had announced this set in March I would definitely have thought it to be an April fool's joke. This must be one of the most tedious sets to build.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks like a very boring set to build.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I wonder if it's as strong as vibranium when I throw it...

@CCC said:

Agreed. It looks like a very repetitive build. And people criticised 21331 for all the 1x1 plate laying! Speaking of which, any word on the Death Egg robot? I was hoping we'd get more info on it today since we get so many sets revealed to us overnight.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

if i cannot hold it in my hand, is useless.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hm....I was on the fence about it before, but now seeing that the back appears so "unfinished" without the straps makes me even less likely to buy this.

Maybe I'll bite if it hits 40% off like Black Panther....

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO is making so may strange sets this year. Who is going to buy this thing?

I would buy a four-dimensional LEGO set; building in hyperspace would be an interesting challenge!

Gravatar
By in United States,

So compared it to the BrickerBuilders(?) Shield.
Their shield is bigger (24” diameter), but uses 200 less elements. Looks huge.
They do a stacking method like see for LEGO life sized statues, models, etc. with some Technic.
Reviewers say it’s incredibly sturdy.
It comes with flexible straps attached in the back to hold just like the real prop and you can wall mount it.
Wish LEGO had at least the wall mount.
Both have table top display stands.
BUT, big but, theirs is $700 friggin’ dollars.
For me I’m going with LEGO one and I’ll figure out a way to wall mount it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great curved building Technic, but I will save my money for the next Death Star if TLG takes the hint!

“I understood that reference!”

The lack of a handle is bizarre. Then again, I don’t suppose either of the gauntlets was wearable?

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s my understanding that next up is Ant Man’s belt, though it’s only 23 inches in length and the buckle doesn’t clasp.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego bricks do not naturally lend themselves to round shapes, so the fact that this looks as good as it does is super impressive.

But with that said, this looks like it would be super boring and repetitive to put together. I also wonder about how sturdy it is, given all of those plates.

You can hold it in your hand. Just, you know, be careful where you place your hands, and whatever you do, don’t drop it.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

One thing you guys must certainly test: How does it hold up if you hit it with Thor's Hammer?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set executes on its goal very well. It also looks like the most pointless 18+ set yet.

People point out how repetitive the Colosseum is for a build, but it still has the novelty of being a well-detailed scale model of a piece of architecture built with Lego. This is a big Lego dish.

More power to those that will buy this set and be satisfied, but at $200 MSRP, a replica made out of solid metal would be a more satisfying souvenir to me.

Comparisons between genuine articles and 18+ Lego products based on them are often controversial discussion points, and most of the time I find that the Lego sets have uniquely different points of value to warrant themselves. The only thing I can come up for with this is simply the achievement of making a decently convincing large dish out of Lego, which doesn't require the Captain America IP to do. That said, it does have better PPP than the other recently revealed $100+ Marvel sets.

By in France,

Wall hangable?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh, wow, I just saw the low angle shot. Why was there no mention of the fact that the points of the star protrude so much from the surface of the shield? Those tips have to be at least a brick above the actual shield. Now that actually looks bad.

In terms of overall value, the price per piece is actually lower than I would have expected, but in terms of a parts pack it's really just stuffed with basic plates in basic colors, with a fair number of mismatched 2x6 dark-blue wedge plates, and a ton of mismatched 2x6 red wedge plates. If there's anything unique about that minifig, the price is likely to go stratospheric, since there's not likely to be much value in parting this out to sell on Bricklink.

@jdm said:
"Wall hangable?"

Is it _possible_ to hang it on a wall? Sure, with a little work, it's definitely possible. It might help if you actually build it on the wall. Is it _designed_ to hang on a wall? Absolutely not. The back, as shown above, looks like a fanblade, but there doesn't seem to be anything built in with that in mind.

Gravatar
By in United States,

is the minifig exclusive to this set? An exclusive fig might help move more copies... :D

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

at first glance, it's very attractive... the colors, the symmetry and circular build... however, i do see a lot of repetitive which will make this set a boring build... i might consider getting it if it is on discount... besides, there is no handle on the back which is a minus for me...
