Marvel Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

After several days of disappointing models from the Marvel Advent Calendar, day sixteen saw the arrival of an elegant throne, clearly produced for Loki given its colour scheme.

One would therefore expect Loki himself today...

A few ago, I described the accessory rack we received as a new low for the Avengers Advent Calendar. In some regards, I think that is still the lowest point of the calendar, but the Cloak of Levitation is a definite rival. While the cloak is a character of sorts, with an apparent personality, separating this from Doctor Strange is absolutely ridiculous and a clear example of stretching the contents to fill an extra day.

Overall - I like the Cloak of Levitation element very much, but seeing it alone on day seventeen is absurd.

Marvel AC has jumped the shark!

Minifigure accessories: The next level of simplicity in advent calendars...inventory parts: 24. Great idea, Lego!!!

I'm really not regretting my decision to skip the Marvel calendar, this year, and buy the City calendar instead. Nope, I'm actually pretty happy with my decision.

Maybe the final six days of the calendar will just be one infinity stone, in each day? That's it, isn't it, that's basically the remainder of the calendar until next Sunday.

Wow. One could not ask for a more deceptive and cheap (I think skinflint is the word for it?) gift. Sometimes I regret not buying SW or Marvel AC, but when I see what comes out, I don't.

I thought my advent calendar had missing pieces... Apparently not...

Yeah I’d heard this one was coming. Didn’t realise it came -before- the minifig who usually wears it though which makes absolutely no sense. At least the jetpack came after the Cap who was supposed to wear it. Whoever designs the Marvel advent calendars just doesn’t bring their A-game, do they?

Not to mention, Loki's throne gets included ... but Loki is (so far, at least) missing. Whereas Doctor Strange's cape gets its own day. You'd want to hope that a Doctor Strange minifig will at least show up soon, but I mean, there's no guarantee.

This isn't just a bad advent calendar, right? This is just ... bizarre. Like, it's gone right through disappointing and come out the other end to emerge in a world were up is down and nothing makes sense anymore.

I've been going through last years Friends AC, so I had a one-piece gift today as well: https://brickset.com/article/84402/friends-advent-calendar-day-17 I much prefer the one I got, though. I'd have been very disappointed if I'd gotten the Marvel AC this year, especially since I not only had a Cloak of Levitation from 76205, but bought an extra one on PaB. Of course, part of the reason I didn't get the MAC was because there wasn't the usual picture of all the gifts. This and a couple of other days' gifts have me suspecting I know why they did that... What happened to you, Marvel AC? Your freshman year was pretty strong, and your sophomore and junior entries had some bright spots, but were overall disappointments.

I think I'll be getting friends next year

By in United Kingdom,

They couldn't even throw in some magical gizmos to build or anything? Glad I skipped the Lego calendars this year and got a cider one instead

By in Netherlands,

They could've at least given some pieces to put together a coat rack to hang the cape on until Dr. Strange appears...

I feel bad for anyone who paid full price for this. This would be acceptable if the retail price was $20 but when your pricing starts at $45 and you’re supposed to be the standard for brick toys then this truly is a low point. The epitome of mailing it in.

And as I said before there is no cohesive theme. We went from an “Arc Reactor” to a Loki throne to COL (when the two characters never shared a second of screen time) is lacking story telling and any semblance of imagination.

I’m not totaled disappointed since I bought it for $20 and only for Spider-Man, Black widow, and extra parts but if I paid $45 for this I wouldn’t buy another one again at that price.

Wow, if this doesn't kill a kids excitement at the Marvel Calendar, I don't know what would.

@Zordboy:
No, don’t be silly. Infinity stones come on sprues, so you always get them in multiples of four. Also, throne yesterday, cape today…clearly the throne is for the cape.

Just the cloak? O.M.G.

While I am mostly pleased with the calendar, I was pretty disappointed with today's offering.

Flip it upside down and it's a luxurious armchair. Alongside Loki's chair from day 16, we've got the beginings of a Marvel Jedi Counsil Chamber...

This. Is. Insulting.
I said before that this felt phoned in, but it genuinely feels like a slap in the face to all those who bought it. But then overpriced Marvel sets seem to be a factor of 2023 (Looking at you Hoopty 76232)
TLG please take note!!!

There's a reason this calender is being sold at $20 at so many places for quite some time.

Nothing else, just a brick

SW will have a gun rack followed by 4 days of various blasters - one per day

By in United Kingdom,

My 6 year old son just looked at me when he opened this 'gift'. The most I had was 'The cloak did like Spider-Man'. He put it on Spiday, realised it looked a bit silly with hiis Christmas jumper and took it off and left it where it was.

Cheers designers of this year's Marvel calendar. I skipped last year's as it looked (and actually was by all accounts) terrible, thought you'd gotten back on track.

Nope.

If I was opening this advent calendar and saw this, I'd immediately lose patience and open the rest of the days.

Talk about dumb.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Its because of days like this the calendar got massively discounted down by a third. Seriously, I could make an entire calendar that was just christmas variants of mini-figs every single year without struggle for designs or resorting to just giving everyone 'ugly sweaters'. Or at the very least make a bunch of interconected mini-builds that would make a larger play feature.... I mean... Some stud shooter turrets, some themed barricade scenery, couple of themed snowmen... Easy winter snowball fight right there.

As a Disney World fan I stalk message boards on current topics there as well as Lego. It’s hard not to come off as negative for something we all love but it’s truly about the passion and expectation to deliver a quality product. When that is lacking it is easy to see and even easier to point out.

I enjoy coming to these comment sections to see all the witty comments on the day’s builds. Shame on Lego for turning our funny holiday discord into a forum for disdain.

Folks, as pathetic as today's entry is, I don't think stuff like it is the reason the calendar was discounted so heavily in some areas. I somehow doubt the retailers care whether people like what they get; as long as they don't return it, the retailer makes a profit and is happy.

@Binnekamp: Now you have me wanting a Pixar calendar.

It’s the mother of all popped collars!

@bealegopro:
Oddly, the SWAC was the only one I found below 50%, and this year is rare in that I’d say it actually beats the HPAC for best of the bunch.

@TheOtherMike:
Deep down, I’ve always wanted a Pixar Advent Calendar. In fact, they could just do 24 Claw Aliens dressed up as different Pixar characters, and that’s would make me quite happy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I liked last year’s Guardians calendar but days like this tell me that there isn’t enough material to make a Marvel advent calendar every year.

I think the implication is supposed to be that large numbers of people were hunting down advent calendar spoilers and deciding not to buy this one because of foreknowledge that one of the days was just a cape, causing it to sell poorly. Which sounds insane to me, but so do half the things people say here tbh.

Anyway, GOODTIME CHRISBUMPS, childs! Today LIMBO and MARBLES have a BLANKET for all!

By in United States,

Okay, no more Kang jokes. Let's get real.

The minute I opened this slot, I was floored. Yesterday's throne seemed like a perfect setup for a Loki minifigure, maybe even one with a fun sweater pattern.

This is a whole new level of abysmal. I've even gone so far as to open a few slots ahead as I just could not believe that this is where we're at, and I can safely say that (without spoilers) the rest of the calendar is a bust. We can only go lower now.

Something something thanks a lot Kang. This calendar makes the Guardians calendar look absolutely solid in comparison.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

THIS is why I didn't get any advent calendars this year!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don’t know what you all are complaining about. I got a Dr Strange minifigure with the cape today. The problem is that the minifigure is on a different timeline than us.

By in United States,

Yet another reason I returned this Calendar. I think I need to break open the Wine Advent Calendar I bought at half off in Costco Yesterday just to finish off opening the rest of the SW, HP & City calendars I did buy this year. The calendars mostly used to be packed with really interesting builds & lots of parts but the last few years have been getting really small and obscure. Not a fan of spreading out certain builds over several days when years ago you actually got the complete build all on one day & the matching minifig either the day before or day after.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The gold webs pack was pushing it, but this, THIS is just a new low. I opened the door for this one and just left it in the box, if we do get an appropriate character for this then I will open it. This really should have come WITH the minifigure. I have mostly been enjoying the calendar up until this point, but this was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.
Maybe next year we will get an advent calendar that consists only of minifigures, but at a rate of one part per day, (hmm, probably shouldn't give TLG any ideas).
