Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 16

Posted by ,

Day fifteen saw the arrival of a third item based on Return of the Jedi and I envisage a few more to come, which is fitting for this movie's fortieth anniversary.

Will it be Imperial, Rebel or Ewok affiliated...?

The rear entrance to the Death Star II's shield generator most assuredly belongs to the Empire! This model is quite unusual for an Advent Calendar because bigger locations tend to be chosen when recreating them at such a tiny size, such as Cloud City, Jabba's Palace or the Ewok village. The shield bunker looks good though, putting 1x2 grille slopes to clever use for its angular walls. However, the structure feels fragile and parts are easily dislodged.

Overall - I like the shape of the shield bunker and this model is unusual, albeit rather fragile too.

5. Friends - Minidolls are just not allowed to sit normally. It makes me angry!
4. SW - kinda dull, but I am a sucker for grill wedges. Also, i think you can slap this model as a whole onto any scifi-vehicle.
3. HP - yeah, it looks nice. Really.
2. City - once christmas is over, you can put this into your antiques store MOC
1. Marvel - proof you CAN have something cool in a Marvel AC! Tomorrow, I wanna see Loki!

By in United Kingdom,

Nice template for a radiator build

Would have benefitted from a radar dish imo

It could do with bracket part 73825 in the middle, pointing backwards, to represent the door. Otherwise, a nice little AC model.

These last few days drove me to watch RotJ again last night, though.

By in United States,

This is like a build from an advent calendar from 10 years ago. Worst day of the year I think.

"The shield is down. Commence attack on the Death Star's main reactor."(Admiral Ackbar)
Thus begins the best scene in the original Star Wars Trilogy, if not in all the the 3 trilogies.
Prove me wrong!!!

And you can even pop the grilled off to replicate the exploding effect from 8038!

I agree. I also really like the section before, and how the music kicks up a notch when the rebels realise it's a trap. [Lando:] "But how can they be jamming us if they don't know we're.....here?"

And the most embarrassing. The galactic empire destroyed by a handful of rebels? and stormtroopers being killed by tiny little EWOKS. ROTJ is a great movie but annoying to think about it in some ways.

By in United States,

No less than seven sets include part 26604 in dark-bley this year, so why did we get the four-stud version in this model?

@donnyman1972:
For me, it’s the point in the Ep6 duel when Luke starts turning to the Dark Side. John Williams was in peak form when composing the music for that scene.

I though about that scene too. Yes the dark choir is spine tingling and as you say John Williams was in top form, The only criticism that I can say, and it is a feeble criticism, is that the music was too short. However the sheer exhilaration of the music and the special effects of the various craft entering the Death Star just about gives it the edge in my humble opinion.

I almost can't believe this is a real thing. It looks AWFUL. Like something you would put together with random pieces in about 14 seconds, then decide what it looks like afterwards.

Nice edit on the build. Cheese grater battlepack.

I think all the other prior criticism of this build is astute and on-point. This is below the excellence that we've come to expect from the SWAC of the past two years. This one needed some further work... and pieces!

"Well... Maybe I can hotwire this thing."

By in Australia,

Wait, that’s the bunker? I thought it was a terrible rendition of the landing platform.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can see the bunker, but it needs a bit of hillside and greenery to help sell it. It needs a bit more depth, a closed door, and some green to really sell it. There's certainly a way to do that, but I also don't own a single advent calendar, so I don't know how detailed instructions can be on a little door. It's not a bad start with the surrounding context clues, but it's still lacking something to really make it clear.

By in United States,

I got two of these in my calendar. Anyone else who already built the entire calendar get two also?

@MCLegoboy:
Instructions for at least all of the recent ACs are available through the instructions portal on LEGO.com. They're organized in chronological order, L-R, top to bottom, so if you zoom in you can browse the early stuff without any spoilers for later in the season. Each of these has to fit on a door that's maybe a little larger than a 4x4 plate, and work as a single image. Adding a patch of green would be easy if it was just one plate (4x4?), and they could show this model above the plate with an arrow indicating that you need to attach it to the top. More complex scenery would be tricky if it's not fully visible in that single isometric view.

By in United States,

My kid just "built" this and well, we think it's lame as can be. I mean they can't all be great but this was like a pack of extra pieces. Floating bricks not even fully connected. How very boring. Grade: F-

By in United States,

I’ve been putting most of the builds on a small Christmas tree on our dining room table. From about 3 feet away and in the shadow of a limb this build looks pretty cool. Up close it’s pretty lame.

I know I feel like someone left the door open! :)
