Ideas review results revealed!
Posted by Huw,
The results of the third review period of 2023 have just been announced!
Two projects from 42 have been selected to be made into sets, and one from the previous review period is still on hold.
Find out the pair that will be making their way onto the shelves next year after the break.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by 2PPL
The Italian Riviera by Galaxy333
Additionally, the Pixar Luxo jr. lamp project is still on hold, "as we have a few final things to check".
What do you think of the results?

Absolutely love the Italian Riviera, hope it makes it through productionisation with minimal changes
I am guessing the Pixar Lamp has stability issues.
Hopefully whatever issues there are with the Pixar Lamp gets cleared up,
As that would be a nice small hopefully relatively cheap set for a change, while still depicting a very recognisable icon
I watched the video pretty soon after it was posted this morning, and I was sitting there chanting in my head "Please be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Please be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory..." so, I let out a huge "YESSS!!" when the first result was announced.
I'm a huge fan of this particular tribute to the Roald Dahl book. The Chocolate River and candy-covered bridge perfectly encapsulates this children's classic, and I particularly love the designer's representation of the core characters. I hope TLG keeps the likeness roughly the same, rather than choosing to base the characters off the 1971 and 2005 movies. Veruca as a blonde, dressed in pink, and complete with a white fur wrap and tiara, is visually perfect IMHO, and I love Violet's long curly brown hair-piece.
I'm also pleasantly surprised at the second pick. The Italian Riveria is beautifully rendered, and although my own Lego City (which is a mash-up of various IPs and world locations) is supposed to be set in the winter, I'm sure I'd find some way to incorporate this set.
Anyway, congratulations to both designers. Suffice to say, I'm personally very satisfied with the results.
Not bad picks, would have liked the A Team van, but I still hold out a little hope that Speed Champions does it (and KITT) at some point, if they are still doing fictional vehicles (I keep seeing the second F&F one on heavy discounts...)
I would prefer Burton's Charlie…
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a dream come true! I can’t wait to get this next year. :)
Subnautica and No Man’s Sky I’m a little disappointed about. Granted I understand, but still those are two of my favorite games. I’m happy with the results overall though. Pixar lamp is novel but probably pass, I suppose I’ll have to see about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But very much looking forward to the Riviera!
Pleased the Italian Riviera was chosen - I am sure Lego will do a good job with this (as they did with the A-Frame Cabin, which is a beautiful set. A shame the Sequoia Trail set wasn't chosen, as I think we need more of this type of 'Outdoors' theme and I definitely would have bought it. Hopefully the rejection of Abu Simbel means some sort of Adventurers tribute/reboot is in the pipeline instead. I have no interest in getting the Charlie & Chocolate Factory set.
Yes! I've been hoping for the Willy Wonka set ever since it came onto Ideas!
Why Brickset, why spoiler the results and not just put a video before the break so people can decide to watch the video first or just reveal the results right away? Please consider this for furure results.
Now I’ve got that Violet Beauregard song stuck in my head. Chewing, chewing all day long…
WILLY WONKA!!! Finally the Ideas team gives us something we actually want!
It's kind of weird though. The project name says Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - and the build matches that specific film too - but the minifigures are clearly from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Not sure what's up with that, but I'm really hoping the final product is based on the OG movie, not the unhinged Johnny Depp version.

Wow. I didn't know anybody liked that version, as I know nobody who watched it and said it was better than Gene Wilder's version. To me (and everyone I spoke to), it deviated too far from the original story.
May I ask why you prefer it?
(Side note: We really need a 'Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator' film!)
Judging by the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory set, as well as being Dr. Doom, Tony Stark is also Mike TV. Must be a meta-metaverse thing.

The original book is called 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. For whatever reason, the 1971 film changed the title, possibly to capitalise on the stardom of the actor playing 'Willy Wonka' (i.e. Gene Wilder).
Personally, I thnk TLG would be wise to avoid basing any of the minifigs on either the 1971 film or the 2005 version. If they are compelled to base it on any live-action adaptation of the source material, it would be more sense to use the currently touring Sam Mendes theatrical musical as a template, but I'd still prefer an entirely fresh interpretation of these characters, that go back to the book (which in any case would hopefully avoid more tiresome clashes between fans of the respective movies. The minifigs chosen by 2PPL don't obviously seem to be based on either of the two live-action movies, but they do share a few similarities with the aforementioned play.
Riveriera looks solid, WW seems to juvenile in its design, Nightmare looks like a nightmare regarding stability, The Lamp is kinda bland, Twilight is boring, Botanical Garden excellent, none of the rest interests me in any way.
Yes, you´re correct, I'm back at work and grumpy as hell.
Would have been happy if it was "Fry and the Slurm Factory"
Seriously? They chose Charlie and the chocolate factory over phineas and ferb?

Same here. It's one of those designs that seems like it's been on Lego Ideas forever, always being thwarted at the final hurdle, so it would have been a crushing disappointment if this set had been declined again.
Disappointed that the No Man's Sky Radiant Pillar didn't make it. Congrats to the selected though.

Don’t care. I want it regardless.
@Murdoch17:
Funny, I prefer Burton’s Charlie to Wilder’s Willy Wonka precisely because of how much the latter deviates from the original story.
Loving that Italian Riviera diorama. Must buy purchase for me.
Really nice choices and I always look forward to seeing Lego's final interpretation.
A little sad Gallery of Warriors didn't make it, as it was a great looking ship!
Ooh! Finally some licensed sets! Might pick up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and will DEFINITELY pick up the luxo lamp
"Riviera", not "Rivier*i*a".

We really don’t. Going to space is fun, but the end plot feels tacked on and I’m pretty sure some of the White House scenes are kind of racist by today’s standards.
Fine with this because my wallet can't take anymore. Happy for those who like and want these though!
Neither build is up my alley but I’ll track down an Oompa or two
The Italian Riveria has the potential to be like the Old Fishing Store.

Really? I never read that into it as a kid... I guess I was naive.
yeahhhh! Go 2PPL go!
I hope Sariel's Mechanical Flip Calendar can win.
Ah yes, another Ideas review. I'm sure I'd be dissap... Actually, the Riviera looks pretty neat. If it's not too expensive, I might pick it up. Couldn't really care for the Chocolate Factory though: I grew up on the 2005 version.
Those two were probably the right picks. Only other one I would have gotten would have been the Krusty Burger, or the Steve Irwin minifigure.
Regardless of the submission I'd be surprised if the final version isn't based on the Gene Wilder version. Even ignoring that the Burton version was a travesty on nearly every level, most people associate this film with the story.
No doubt there are Dahl authorities who say it should be based on the book, but I suspect Lego will want to target an audience whose main connection to the theme is the 1971 film.
If so, it will also be interesting to see if they call it Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'The Italian Riviera' have the potential to be excellent if they're done well. I'd certainly buy both.
The Pixar Lamp, presumably the "few final things to check" are how to convey some movement to make it iconic. As it stands it's just a bog standard anglepoise lamp and a ball.
Really looking forward to the 'Botanic Garden' which will hopefully be what the Friends one should have been (i.e complete!)
Also looking forward to 'Disney Magic' providing that Mickey Mouse has been changed enough so he doesn't still look like a dog!
We’re also waiting for the Ideas 80’s set reveal later this month.
Two very colourful results! Excited to see the final models!
I am very sad the A-team van didn't make it (yet again)! I hope this means with big sets like the BTTF DeLorean and Ecto-1 that an A-Team van is in the pipes already!
I feel like these are the first results in a long time that most AFOLs will be happy with. Too bad about Sariel's project not getting approved though, that guy is a legend whom TLG stupidly stopped making an ambassador (free sets to review and the like) and he more than well deserves one of his projects to be made into a set someday. We love you, buddy. :)

I would say our approach was relatively spoiler free compared to, say, https://jaysbrickblog.com/news/lego-ideas-selects-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-and-italian-rivieria-as-your-next-sets/ and http://bricksfanz.com/new-lego-ideas-sets-have-been-revealed-3/
Not my picks and (as usual) a shame that some truly creative ideas (Lego Anatomy!) get snubbed again, but at least I can see why they went for these. Will be interesting to see how much they're gonna change on that The Italian Riviera set. Seems less of an issue with the CatCF set, unless they change it to the 2005 film which seems rather unlikely.
As for Luxo Jr., what's taking so long?

If you want to watch the video, you can find the video. If you click on an article about the results, it isn't super shocking that the results are there. As long as it isn't spoiled on the main page, before clicking the link, then there isn't a problem
I would have liked the plant set.
I like the Italian Rivera, although it's making me go to search for Venice bricklink set now.
I really hope the Pixar light makes it through, I love it. It's like Wallie, irresistibly cute.
Happy for the second winner. Finally an original idea with the potential to be a beautiful set.
I'm personally very much looking forward to the Italian Riviera.
Isn't there a new Wonka movie out also? So I guess now is as good of time as any.
I just want some Oompas.

I also prefer the Tim Burton Version, I think it has the better story and characters. Now if only we could swap the songs in from the other version...

Perhaps, unlike Pixar, they want to be sure they have Luxo's permission to sell merchandise based off of their lamp?
Wonder if the Wonka set will feature ‘The Unknown’?
Love all these picks actually (especially if Luxo ends up a reality). Great round.
Especially cause I just got sucked down the Subnautica rabbit hole again, I'm bummed the Aurora didn't make it through. 'Course I'd rather they make a set of the Reaper Leviathan or Sea Emperor, but the Aurora would've filled that spaceship-shaped-hole I've been left with since LEGO never bothered making a physical Venture Koi toy.
About the video vs text thing, I much prefer this text version with pictures. I can skip over to the parts I want easily and don't have to wait for someone to talk slowly and find the relevant parts in a video.
That being said, it wouldn't hurt to put the links to the reveal videos. But for sure I'm dropping this site if it becomes all tiktoks and youtube commentaries!

If ever there was an Ideas project that deserved the “Shut Up and Take My Money” meme…
Another round, another A-Team denial... At least we shouldn't have to watch Zelda be denied anymore!

Agree to disagree. I think the 1971 film is much more universally loved, so it would make much more sense to do that.
Yet another ho-hum IP I have zero interest in gets chosen. On the other hand the Riviera looks very intriguing to me. I must admit that I have purchased a few previous IP based Ideas sets because they were well done and could easily fit in with the themes I collect. But at least I can save some money to put toward other sets by skipping this candy blob.
Really hoping that everything works out with the Luxo Jr. lamp! That set is a must-buy.
Italian Rivera looks like it could be a great set!
I was hoping for the James Webb Space Telescope to add to the NASA collection. None of the rest of that lot are of much interest. Maybe the Chocolate Factory, depending on how the final version looks. Looking forward to the Nightmare Before Christmas reveal, it must be coming soon if it releases in September.
Im very happy with these IDEAS picks.
At last we get Charlie & The Chocolate Factory! I'm surprised it took this damn long for Lego to realise it's a popular IP.
Italian Rivera is great to get another building (like Old Fishing Store). I just hope the price doesn't make the lego set as much of a ripoff as Italy itself.
More minifigure scale non-IP sets from IDEAS please!
(Yes I am well aware Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an IP but it's been on IDEAS for a long time and is well known rather than some passing fad or obscure sitcom no one cares about)
It's also hilarious that they ban modular buildings on BDP and then accept what is basically a modular style set for IDEAS.

Or Copyright/Licencing issues...
Once again I will be skipping both winners. *sigh*
Only me that was looking forward to the Working Canal Lock?
Not really interested in either of them. The Italian Riviera looks nice though.
Another movie IP and another house/building set
Nothing interesting or new, super very easy pass
Not the best thing the could have picked, not the worst.
Meh
Lots of very impressive builds in this round, even if none of them personally appeal (not interested in the subject matter, build looks like 1-3 colours etc). Honestly I think I’m most enthused for the reading gwp of all the forth-coming sets, but that might change once the finished product is shown. I was not interested in the insects until I saw the final product.
Congrats to the successful designers though
My guess is Disney doesn't want the Pixar Lamp to be an Ideas set, and it will show up as an official Disney theme set, much like the Disney Camera set.
And then AFOLs will claim Lego "stole the design" from the Ideas fan creator.
A shame that No Man's Sky set didn't make it, I didn't even know it was in the running, but I would have bought that one for sure.
I wonder how much the Oompa Loompas will be selling for on the aftermarket. It'd be a challenge to have a decent song and dance routine with only the 2 included in the set!
Not the ones I was hoping for, but they could have selected worse... looks like my bank account is safe for a bit longer.
I hate that LEGO has largely become a vessel for licensed collectibles.
Should have been LEGO Anatomy & A-Team.
I wonder if my 2020 Ideas submission was an inspiration at all for the Italian Riviera:
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/4cc8bdb8-cbcd-4920-85bb-789c99c2d874
I see a few similarities, but in all fairness there have been quite a number of attempts at this theme.

Surely the van and face's car would make a very popular 2 pack
