Traffic and user review of the year
Posted by Huw,
Just before Christmas I like to look back at traffic statistics for the year and compare them with previous years.
The figures from Google Analytics are as follows:
2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | |
Page views | 85,658,634 | 78,595,421 | 58,871,313 | 49,404,168 | 40,447,000 | 25,434,000 |
Visits | 20,761,051 | 19,810,668 | 15,656,887 | 11,408,177 | 7,926,000 | 4,556,000 |
Visitors | 6,624,114 | 6,187,944 | 4,980,424 | 3,895,394 | 2,719,000 | 1,766,000 |
All three figures show an increase of approximately 9% compared to 2013. The growth is not as great as that seen in 2013 but it's growth nevertheless and I am pleased that the figures are still heading in the right direction.
Furthermore, Quantcast currently ranks the site at 6,632 in the chart of sites most visited in the USA, and Alexa gives it a global rank of 13,947 which is the highest it's ever been in both charts. I believe that, other than LEGO.com, it is the most visited LEGO-related website on the internet: it's currently ranking higher than BrickLink at Alexa and I can think of no other site that enjoys a similar level of traffic.
The site is currently the busiest it's ever been, as shown by the statistics page which looks more like the Canadian Rockies every year, as traffic peaks and troughs through the year, but still continues to climb year-on-year. Sunday evenings (GMT) tend to be the busiest time of the week and last weekend I witnessed 728 concurrent users on the site, viewing just over 400 pages a minute. It may exceed that tonight. Thankfully the new server is taking it in its stride.
In terms of member numbers, this year 47500 members have logged in. This month 13,500 have done so. This year over 26,000 people have signed up, compared with 20,000 in 2013. 5500 people who joined the site in 2010 or before are still using the site regularly. In January or February next year the 100,000th member will sign up, which will be a remarkable milestone.
You will recall that the new look Brickset was introduced in February 2014, One feature of it is a responsive design that adapts to your device's screen resolution, implemented to meet the needs of a growing number of users that use phones and tablets to view the site. Such users now account for about 40% of all traffic, compared to about 32% this time last year, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to 50% this time next year.
That's enough numbers for now... I will take this opportunity to thank all of you for visiting and making Brickset such a great community, everyone who has helped with the running of the site and the forum this year (Grahame, CapnRex101, LostInTranslation, DrDaveWatford, Rocao, Matthew, Kempo81), those that contributed articles that helped ensure that Brickset remains the best and most informative LEGO news site on the Internet and finally the LEGO CEE team for supporting us by providing prizes and sets to review throughout the year.
Stay tuned: I will be publishing my review of the Detective's Office in the next day or so, Chris will be reviewing Elsa's Sparkling Ice Palace shortly and of course he and Lucy will continue their entertaining look at the Advent calendars. Brickset's a great place to be, I hope you agree :)

"Most visited Lego site on the internet after Lego.com"
That deserves a round of applause if nothing else. Well done, Huw and team - 6.5m people can't be wrong!
:o)
The figures are heading in the left direction...
First I just thought how is it a good thing that visitor number decreases by year, then I saw that the columns are in reverse order.
^ displayed as you would annual accounts, with the latest year on the left.
Well deserved, thanks for all the great work you do Huw and Brickset team!
My son and I have found Brickset invaluable since signing up. Thank you for this service!
Hup, hup, hup, Huw, and a round of applause for Brickset numbers going Up, Up, Up again! The site is successful mostly because it is useful. Keep up the great work, team! Happy holidays as well!
I could not manage my set inventory and MiniFigs without this site! I am really grateful to HUW and the team for creating this wonderful source of information, hurdling all the obstacles (both technical and membership related), of all your time, effort, and management of this site. Thank you Bunches and Bunches.
Kind of a surprise not to see as much growth as last year. I'd expect to have seen a lot of growth for LEGO sites in general thanks to the hype generated by The LEGO Movie.
Good effort Huw. J.
About 2000 to go, so at about 500 new members a week, we should hit it at the end of January.
Ctrl + Add brickset.com as primary homepage. done. well done, congrats and thx!
Congrats. Love the site and have since The Lego Movie brought me out of my dark ages. Wishing you and your team continued success.
Waw, great figures! Well done to all of the Brickset team! This website and forum is definitely part of the reason why being an AFOL is so much fun!
