Star Wars 'What's Missing?' building contest
Posted by CapnRex101,
The LEGO Star Wars theme is now in its seventeenth year and over 500 sets have been released in that time but there are still a range of vehicles and locations which LEGO has yet to produce, or has not done so for some time. This year Brickset published a series of 'What's Missing?' articles which explored the possibilities for these absent sets and we concluded each article with three suggestions for models which might be released in the future.
Now it's your chance to turn some of these ideas into reality in our Star Wars 'What's Missing?' building competition!
Read on for more details...
Here's what you have to build:
Imagine you are part of the LEGO Star Wars design team. You have been given some ideas for sets to design and a price point to aim for in each case. We would like you to choose one idea from the list below and build your vision of the set as though you were designing it as an official LEGO set for worldwide release.
The set ideas below were all pitched in the 'What's Missing?' series and you may find my suggested set descriptions useful, although the features described need not appear in your design. Links to the original articles where you will find the set descriptions are provided below.
- 75201 Mos Espa - £69.99, $79.99, €89.99 - Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker, Shmi Skywalker, C-3PO (incomplete), Watto, Jira, Kitster. Set description.
- 75203 Coruscant Pursuit - £49.99, $59.99, €59.99 - Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Zam Wesell. Set description.
- 75204 Droid Foundry Escape - £59.99, $69.99, €69.99 - Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidala, C-3PO, R2-D2, Battle Droid (x4). Set description.
- 75207 Umbaran Starfighter - £49.99, $59.99, €59.99 - ARC Trooper Fives, Clone Trooper Hardcase, Clone Trooper Jesse, Umbaran Soldier (x2). Set description.
- 75210 Senate Duel - £49.99, $59.99, €59.99 - Yoda, Bail Organa, Darth Sidious, Mas Amedda, Commander Thire. Set description.
- 75213 Blade Wing Starfighter - £69.99, $79.99, €89.99 - Hera Syndulla, Garazeb Orrelios, Sabine Wren, Quarrie, BG-81. Set description.
- 75216 The Lars Homestead - £69.99, $79.99, €89.99 - Luke Skywalker, Owen Lars, Beru Lars, C-3PO, R2-D2, Biggs Darklighter, Tusken Raider. Set description.
- 75218 Mission to Dagobah - £49.99, $59.99, €59.99 - Luke Skywalker (training), Yoda, R2-D2 (muddy), Darth Vader. Set description.
- 75219 TIE Bomber - £59.99, $69.99, €69.99 - TIE Fighter Pilot, Imperial Navy Helmsman, Admiral Ozzel, Captain Needa. Set description.
- 75225 Maz Kanata's Castle - £49.99, $59.99, €59.99 - Rey, Maz Kanata, Captain Ithano, Quiggold, Bazine Netal. Set description.
Minifigures need not be included in your entry as many of those suggested do not yet exist. Furthermore, as the set designer it would not be your responsibility to create new minifigures. However, you may wish to include placeholder minifigures in your images in order to demonstrate play features.
Entries will be judged on the following:
- Play value.
- Display value.
- Accuracy to the source material.
- Adherence to the pricing guidelines provided*.
*For instance, a set costing £49.99, $59.99 or €59.99 is likely to contain approximately 500 pieces based on sets which are currently available.
How to enter:
- Upload a maximum of five photos of your entry, displaying any major features and the model from several angles, to the Brickset Flickr group set up for this competition or post your entry on Instagram using the hashtag #BricksetCompetition.
- Multiple entries are permitted.
Other information:
- Unfortunately we are not able to accept LDD or other virtual creations.
- Custom and non-LEGO components are not permitted.
- Although we won't be judging your photographic skills, please try to light your models evenly and photograph them against a clean background.
- Please upload your entries by 23:59 GMT on the 16th of December.
- To give the judges time to properly consider all entries, winners will be announced early in 2017.
- The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
We are in the process of assembling an exceptionally qualified panel of judges but we can reveal that it will include LEGO Star Wars designer Hans Burkhard Schlömer!
The prizes are not yet confirmed but suffice it to say they will be worth winning.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments.
Good luck!

Is it ok if I don't include minifigs? I don't have too many newer figs and I don't have the parts necessary to make my own.
Sounds like a fun competition! Let's start planning... :)
Sounds cool, but I don't have anywhere close to enough pieces. If it was Super Heroes...well, that might be another story.
Very interesting concept for a building contest. As a casual Star Wars fan I might find this tricky but think I might give it a try
"Minifigures need not be included in your entry"
No LDD? Aww.... :/
The idea is very tempting... :-) Thank you for this competition!
Will it also be done in the futur for smaller (e.g.: microfighters) and bigger sets (e.g.: big system like the millenium falcon -165 € in France-; UCS)? Personally I even prefer the extrems, the chibi micro's where it is obvious they cannot be correctly scaled and satisfying accurate and the bigger sets where those expectations are high and often achieve to be met. In the middle, like in this competition, I'm often frustrated. It is as if you just began to make something great and then you must already stop because there are no more disponible pieces to build with...
Sounds very interesting! And what an exciting selection of a judge. Good to see how valued Brickset is!!!
^^^ I think it's all because of physics.
Looking forward to seeing what people come up with!
This is a brilliant idea! Loved the 'What's missing" series, and the is a great way to end it! My brain gears are turning...
This is a perfect opportunity for me given my ambition to become a LEGO Designer in the near future. I've had a couple of these on my 'ToDo' list but never got round to taking those concepts further. My list for this contest currently consists of three concepts.
If one was to create 'Maz Kanata's Castle' what would you like to see? The entrance and the interior or just an interior with a primary feature of adding it onto the existing '75139 - Battle Of Takodana.'
Thanks in advance.
Can I add features to any of those ideas, for example adding a small maintaince area to the Blade-wing?
@Adzbadboy - That is up to you. In the original article I suggested that the set could be combined with 75139 Battle on Takodana but you are free to design the set as you wish.
@The creative box - Absolutely. The design of the set is completely up to you and does not need to match the suggested set descriptions, although you are welcome to use those for a bit of inspiration if you like.
I don't have the time, but if I did I know what I'd build: UCS A-Wing. It's the one "wing" from the original trilogy missing a UCS version.
Great contest! I do wish there were a bit more variety in the categories, as some are rather similar to each other or essentially set remakes, but the overall concept is really sweet. I especially love the stipulations about building like an actual Lego set--makes it challenging in a fun way.
Can I design sets that aren't there (Crab Droid, underwater Clone Troopers versus Quarren and Shark people Trident)?
Can you use retired piece molds? Sounds like a great contest!
The "whats missing" articles were fun to read. Sad they are over.
^ Mixels competition next week!
Sounds great, and im keen to see the results but have that many people got 500-700 spare (and the right colour and shape) pieces to play with? I recently made a micro Krennics shuttle (which is just black) and I had to buy 60% of the bits....... any chance of a smaller scale comp with a boobie prize?
You should do a competition based on the smaller sets like "An audience with Boss Nass" and "Battle of Utapau". It looks like this competition is for the sets that fall in the $60-$80 range. It would be fun to have a competition with sets that have a smaller build.
Can we have the winner of the competition be the next Lego Ideas set? haha. With the exception of the Umbaran starfighter and the blade wing starfighter I would probably buy any of these if made into a set.
I would like to see a UCS Ghost from Rebels since the one (and probably only) version we got was way too small. I don't have the time to do one between now and the deadline but if someone out there does, and wants the challenge...
^ I think a new, UCS Cloud City is much more overdue... but yeah, a new Ghost to go with January's new Phantom would also be pretty cool.
This sounds awesome! This may be the first contest I'll take part in!
Great original competition. Not sure if I'm good enough yet to do anything like this, but it's a great idea.
Sounds awesome, but with it being near the holliday season I don't dare buy new bricks for the contest, so I'd have to scrap some sets (at least temporarily) to build it... Yikes!
Can I post a Battle of Utapau with Crab Droids or a Battle of Mon Cala?
How many winners will there be? Will there be one winner for each set idea?
@lego maker homeboy - They are not over, just on hiatus for a while.
@Lordmoral - We are only accepting entries based on the ten sets listed above.
@r4lacey - The number of prizes will depend on the number of entries. I think there are unlikely to be enough to warrant a prize for each idea but we will have to wait and see!
Might give this contest a shot.
Oh dang this would be so much fun. But I just don't have the parts. Nor the figures.
Man, what an awesome contest! I will definitely try to get an entry in - thank goodness for the long deadline. ;)
@Daniel.H SAME. Even if I did have the parts I'd have to check each and every brick to make sure it's real lego and not part of the Character Building bricks that are mixed in with that.
Nice idea for a contest! I'm just a casual fan of Star Wars, so I wouldn't know where to begin designing something, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what people come up with - Bricksetters are so creative!
Are there age categories?
Is it possible if leave the airspeeder out from the senate duel set? Then the price of the set would be lowered down to about 40-45€.
the UCS design team were missing in 2016 hopefully they can be found soon
I've always loved the Coruscant pursuit scene, and the LEGO set that went with it. But for some time now I've wanted a newer version of the set. This gives me the perfect opportunity to try to design it myself! :)
Another vote for UCS--maybe you should do a separate UCS competition! We really need an A-Wing to complete things in the alphabet-fighter department. Ghost and Cloud City have also been mentioned. And a UCS TIE-Bomber would complete the original trilogy TIE collection. Rey's speeder might make for an interesting UCS set, too--it could be scaled for the Buildable Figure Rey.
Great @capnrex101 but can we use defunct molds and bricks?
^ It IS real LEGO, so I'm sure you can.
^^ Yes you may.
Are there age categories?
@James"Bucky"Barnes - There are no strict age ranges but I would expect all the sets to fall into a range of about 8-14, as is typical for sets of this size.
^^ It's a make-your-own-tribe one, not a Max one if that's what you thought.
Cool thanks.
????
Do we need to include extact the piece count?
A little off typic but I think a battle on utapau set is in the works. Lego has added Cody and the orange battle droids to the character list on their website.
This looks like a great competition! Good luck to everyone who enters. I have never made a moc set before, but I'm a huge Lego and Star Wars fan, so i might give a couple of the sets a go.
Can we edit the images to demonstrate play features, with arrows and inset photos etc.?
Let's say I design a model in LDD, and have someone else build it for me, and that version wins... what would then happen?
Cool idea for a contest, I hope it will turn out just as great as it looks :D
So in theory, I would be allowed to make an entry for every set proposed... not that I'm going to, but it sounds great fun and think I have time to make multiples :D
Sounds like a fun contest! And what an honor to have such a judge! Just two questions: Can we add/remove minifigs in the minifig lineup? And I know we are not allowed custom parts, but are custom decals allowed?
I would think stability of the model should also be a factor. And to be clear, no illegal connections, right?
@magmafrost - I think the term "illegal" is pretty self-explanatory. If it's a connection set designers wouldn't use, don't use it. ;-)
@Okay Yeah, I would assume they're not allowed, but using illegal connections is such a widespread thing, it seems strange that forbidding them wouldn't be included in the post.
No, LDD, huh... that'd be a lot easier for me... I don't have much LSW.
Guess I'll have to use what I've got.
OH, and what if I've made a model on LDD before and I wanna turn it into a physical model, is that allowed?
Great idea Capt!
Quick question, maybe it can't be answered, I imagine by saying the prizes will be worth winning it'll be something substantial? Just as a rough ballpark, like a >$90 and not something that's like <$60. I'm just a poor college student, so if while I'll plan a build digitally either way, for fun, whether or not I bricklink the parts to enter will depend on how good a chance I think I have and the size of the prize. No point in spending $100 on parts for a chance to win a $50 set. I'd be content with my digital build in that case.
Then again, sounds like the prize may be announced ahead of time? Would that be with ample time to bricklink parts before the contest (2-6 weeks before the deadline is, I'd guess)?
So far I created a Hurid 327 but it is not minifigure scale (its bigger than minifig scale). Is that ok? It has posable arms and legs and is able to stand.
Can I build with LDD and send a instruction file/link to you?
Since I study aboard...
What a fantastic idea and opportunity! Excited to take a crack at this, and break out the Star Wars sets!
On a scale from set to moc, where exacly are we looking to land? Because there's how I would build a TIE bomber, and how lego would build one, and one of those is a lot more accurate to the source material (while the other is a lot sturdier and easier to build). We're being judged on accuracy to the source material, but at the same time this contest seems to be about designing a set, and lego sets are typically a rough representation of the source at best. If we, say, did something similar to what TLG did on the T-70 wing cannons, what kind of a hit would we take to accuracy to source material points? So is this contest about the best we can do, or about imitating TLG?
On another note, is there a forum or something where these things can be discussed more efficiently? This comments system really doesnt seem built for discussion.
Do Brickset competitions have any age restrictions or rules about collaborations? I'm new to competitions, so I apologise for not knowing these things in advance!
^ No: any age and you can collaborate if you like,
Can someone answer my question? If Hurid 327 is bigger than minifig-scale is it ok?
Would it be allowed to enter a video as well as the five pictures necessary? I have a design, but I feel it needs more explanation than a few pictures to do it justice.
Can I build Rey's house?
No, you can only build the ones that´s mentioned in the text.
Wow, 17yrs that has made me feel super old!!
You know, going through this process really shows to me why many of these aren't sets. Lars Homestead is pretty much impossible to replicate, as it's entirely underground. Many of the other sets the pieces simply don't exist to realistically make an accurate set out of it.
Nevertheless I'm still putting my entry together. However, there's clear reasons many of these aren't sets.
Done!!!!!
The first one at least!
So do I have to create a flickr account on yahoo or just post it?
@James"Bucky"Barnes - Yes, you will need to create a Flickr account or post your entry on Instagram.
^LDD actually often allows connections not possible in real life. Alternatively some real life, legal connections don't work in LDD. I have a large collection, but almost entirely older pieces (pre-2005) of random colours. I get some newer sets, but most are sets I want and they remain built.
The problem with LSD is it allows an entirely unlimited amount of pieces in literally any colour. That allows someone to make an entry using potentially hundreds of rare parts that even someone with a massive collection of parts likely won't have.
What I typically do for any contest is build my model in LDD, test some of the sketchy connections in real life, then order the parts I don't have from bricklink. Sure it costs $30 or so. But that's about the cost of any real Lego set.
It's more that occasionally pieces don't line up quite properly digitally, or sometimes they manage to poke through each other. I had things like that happen three times while putting together my entry in digital designer. In real life, the connections usually line up pretty close, but aren't actually possible. Sometimes it's seems to be a glitch. I have one where it will let me connect pieces a certain way on one side of my model, but not in the exact same way on the other side (the connection does not work in real life.)
This will actually be the largest model I've bricklinked yet. If it wasn't a model I'd like to own regardless of the contest, I'd probably shy away from it. Bricklinking stuff gets addicting.
before i enter i would like to be guaranteed that my entry will be judged upon the aspects that were stated before.
Play value.
Display value.
Accuracy to the source material.
Adherence to the pricing guidelines provided.
i no longer support the rebrick contests because they "conveniently" forget the judging aspects they stated a month before and just pick the coolest looking one. i would like my entry to win because it was the best designed. not because it caught someones eye at first glance.
Can we create anyone from the what's missing series or just the ones listed in this article?
@DJ Bricks - Just the ones listed in this article.
@VaderFan2187 - The comments typically close a month after the article has been posted.
