Random minifig of the day: min187

Posted by ,

Today's random minifigure is min187 Micromob Alex, a Minecraft figure that came in one set, 21265 The Crafting Table, released during 2024.

Our members collectively own a total of 2,156 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $0.90.

Why, just why is this a minifigure?

Yes, it's a character, but so is the likes of the buildable Ant-man, yet they don't count that.

Hot take: I prefer "Steve's" arms over the noodle arms Alex introduced to Minecraft. I know arms tend to not be the same size as legs, but this is an abstract block game and I like the limb proportions to match up.

I think neither should be counted as a minifigure.

Whoever decides what is and isn't a minifigure needs to step back and rethink life.

Gee I guess 3 pieces make up the bare minimum for a minifigure no matter what those pieces are.

Whoever decides that is a volunteer (one of two, I believe), who isn't on payroll, so tormenting you might be the only form of payment they receive. You know, if they're into that sorta thing. And aware that you exist.

A little irl lore!

When Minecraft originally started development in 2009 a default player skin was added to the game, which would eventually become known as Steve. According to the game's original creator, Steve was meant to be a genderless representation of a human being for players to latch onto. However, due to having a beard and being named... well "Steve," Steve was usually perceived as male.

So in 2014 Alex was added as a counterpart to Steve. While technically also genderless, they leaned far more into feminine traits. They were actually largely modeled after Jeb, who had taken over as lead developer at the time.

A few years ago a bunch of additional skins were added to the game, but their longevity has made Steve and Alex an iconic duo and poster-children for the franchise.

His rapper name is 2 Platez, like 2 Chainz. His friends call him Lil P.

His momma calls him 2 Plates and a Tile.

All that is really an elaborate cover, for he is clearly an ultra IRA agent.

@TheOtherMike:
So the irony is that, in spite of how many RMotD that you don't actually construct, not a single one of them is molded in one shot. That little bat critter comes closest, but I believe that would technically be 1.5 shots as a dual-molded element. That is, if I've correctly deduced how dual-molded parts are produced.

And usually the "cannot be inventoried" flag is applied to stuff like Aldar Beedo or Sebulba, where they just molded a statue. Stuff is inventoried as either a minifig or an element, but not both.

Smallest size-wise, probably Smallest in terms of piece count, no.

....

And two I'm not sure about, as Bricklink says that Bricklink says that they can't be inventoried:

First off, thank you for the very informative reply! Secondly, hahahahaha just when I thought I had seen every "cursed" product LEGO has released, someone manages to surprise me!

Has a single-mold Sebulba minifig, or another similar fig, been spotlighted in the past? Do those count as minifigs or pieces?

Well wouldn't their life be easier if they didn't make this guy a minifigure. It would free up sometime.

If this is a minifigure, then why aren't the grey and blue round plates from set 75375 Millennium Falcon an R2-D2 minifigure?

Maybe not, but what's in the photo isn't a minifig. Brickset has a massive problem with classifying anything vaguely character-like and less than 6cm tall as a minifig, regardless of what parts it uses.

"Minifig" must have a definition that places some things outside of the definition, or the word becomes meaningless.

As far as I'm concerned, a "minifig" is defined by using one or more of a small number of specialized parts designed specifically for minifig use, such as the classic minifig torso, the skeleton torso, or the Star Wars droid torso, or the Star Wars R2 leg pieces.

A less permissive definition would be based on the CMF line. Every single entry in that almost 900 entry line uses one of two or three dedicated torso pieces, so any character figure that doesn't use one of those torso pieces would appear to be outside Lego's own definition of "minifig".

Brickset does not have a problem. Bricklink, where the data is pulled from, does.

Indeed, and minifigure at bricklink really means character, so long as that character is not a realistic animal like Scooby Doo. Brickset's problem is that it copies BL, and so cars like Lightning McQueen and even teacups like Chip Potts are defined as minifigures here.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The other 5 minifigs in this set are not much better, seems that if it has eyes then a mini-fig but the pig and beaver (which also have eyes stuck on a few plates) are not included since they are clearly animals.

It looks kind of adorable because of the squashed chubby proportions

And, yet, Brickset need not bow and obey.

I don’t believe so.

"Do those count as minifigs or pieces?"

This has changed at least once, per Bricklink. Currently they are listed as minifigs, but I think the two podracers started out as parts. But then R2-D2 got listed as a minifig, and then stuff like droids made of common parts got counted as well, and then it didn’t make as much sense for sentient organic characters to be listed as parts.

@gearwheel:
The legal definition (established so they can use it to protect the minifigure as a trademarked design) says legs, torso, head, pick any two. C-3PO has legs and torso, Ursula has torso and head, and the brick costume people have legs and head. All three of these count under the legal definition. A blob of random parts with a minifig head on top does not. R2-D2 is a character, but not legally a minifig by TLG’s rules (Bricklink does their own thing for the ease of catalog navigation because everyone would expect to find R2-D2 in the same section as C-3PO). Oh, and skeletons aren’t true minifigs either. They only use the head element. Certain Ninjago skeletons don’t even use that.

So, uh…how’s that working out for you?

By in United States,

The definition of a minifigure depends on the set. Whatever a set's closest representation of a character is, are labeled as that set's "minifigures". Within reason, of course. The differently-colored 1x1 studs in the Starship Collection represent characters, but, lacking printing or special molds, they are beyond what one could call a minifigure.

On a different note, who's ready to see Bryce Dallas Howard randomly show up in the Minecraft Movie as Alex with no prior marketing? Legit though, I am excited for some Minecraft YouTuber cameos like Mumbo Jumbo or DanTDM.
